Belief and satisfaction of Czechs with UN, EU and NATO

In February 2008 CVVM probed situation in Czech society concerning trust and satisfaction with some international institutions – concretely United Nations, European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Most Czechs trust to UN (59 %), after that follows EU with 55 % of believing citizens and NATO with 44 %. The same order is also in context of satisfaction with membership in these organizations. 67 % of Czechs feel satisfaction with UN, in related to EU it is 61 % and finally with NATO 48 % of citizens are satisfied.
Taxation in View of Public Opinion

9 % of citizens regard taxation on high-income earners as high, 20 % say it is adequate and 61 % think it is low. Taxation on average-income earners is considered to be high by 47 % of respondents, adequate by 42 % and low by 4 % of citizens. Taxation on low-income earners was supposed to be high by 72 %, adequate by 18 % and low by 3 %. 75 % of respondents think that tax rate should be higher for high-income earners than for low-income earners.
Citizens on Nato and Defense of Country

In January survey CVVM SOÚ AV ČR investigated public attitude to membership of the Czech Republic in NATO and to some aspects concerning this membership as well as national defense in general.
Evaluation of the situation in some areas and expected development of these areas in year 2008

The situation is the same as in previous years. People are most satisfied with supply of goods and services (73 % of respondents expressed their satisfaction), with current situation of Czech culture (58 %) and with relationships of the Czech Republic with foreign countries (45 %). On the contrary dissatisfaction prevails with such areas as a corruption and economical criminality. 73 % of Czech citizens are dissatisfied with economical criminality and 79 % of people are discontented with corruption. In comparism to situation in January 2007 the evaluation of social welfare has worsened by 23 % and dissatisfaction with health service grew by 16 %. On the contrary dissatisfaction with unemployment was reduced by 21%.
Public opinion on imprisonment

In march 2008 CVVM focused on prision system. Informants were asked to decide which facilities should be availiable for prisioners. People are willing to allow medical service (95 % agree on that it should be availiable for all prisioners), 92 % have the same opinion on clean clothes, 83 % agree on books for all (additional 14 % only for minor offenses) and 72 % thought that cooked meal should be accessible for each prisioner (18 % minor offenses). On the other hand 91 % of informants claimed that alcohol should be forbidden for all prisioners. Another 86 % think that prisioners should not be allowed to refuse to work, 85 % claimed mobil phones to be prohibited and 81 % declined possibility of having computer in the cell.
The Czech public about smoking

In february survey made by CVVM there were some questions about public attitudes to smoking. The respondents were asked to say if and how many cigarettes they smoke. They were also asked to rate their personal attitude toward the prohibition of smoking in public places or in the restaurants. CVVM could compare results of public opinion surveys in Hungary and Slovakia.
Party Preferences and Voting Model in February 2008

In February survey CVVM investigated how people trust to political Parties and whether they are willing to take part in elections to Chamber of Deputies. In the press release there are two different types of information : Party preference and a model of voting behaviour. Party preferences give us information about public sympathy with political Parties in the group of citizens who have voting right and there is also included a part of citizens who will not take part in elections or they do not knot who to vote for. Voting model indicate anticipated result of elections to Chamber of Deputies in the time of the survey. Voting model comes out of Party preferences but it includes only those who want to take part in elections and they answered us a Party they would vote for – in short this group does not include undecided people and non – voters.

In January 2008 CVVM SOÚ AV ČR investigated whether respondents trust to selected politicians. They were given a list with 29 names of top politicians who represent political parties present in Chamber of Deputies.
Public opinion on performance of president Vaclav Klaus

In its regular survey in January 2008 the Public Opinion Research Centre focused on the questions about the Vaclav Klaus' presidency. Most Czechs think president Klaus is good in taking care of dignity and respect of his office (79 %) and he fulfills his constitutional functions (70 %). Majority of Czech population supposes president Vaclav Klaus is an autority for people (63 %) and represents the Czech Republic in foreign countries good (61 %). More critic are Czechs to the president‘s influence on political events in the Czech Republic, only 41 % find it „very good“ or „somewhat good“. Also the president's contact with citizens and his awareness of their problems is perceived rather bad, only 36 % of people think president's performance in this particular area is good.
Citizens on U.S. Anti-Missile Radar Base in Czech Republic

January and February surveys of CVVM followed some questions related to the plan to locate U.S. anti-missile radar in Czech Republic. The surveys investigated Czech public's attitudes to this plan as well as to eventual referendum on this matter. The report contains main results of analysis of socio-demographic differences and time comparison with previous surveys of these questions. The survey in January included also a set of questions focused on level and objectivity of information related to location of U.S. anti-missile radar in Czech Republic, which are given to public by Czech government, political opposition, media, experts, representative of local municipalities and anti-radar as well as pro-radar activist groups.
