Use of Educational Projects in Care of Diabetics
LEOPOLDOVÁ, Lenka
The topic of my thesis is {\clqq}Application of education plans to care of diabetics``. Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by a disorder of metabolism of sugars, but also proteins and fats, which leads to increased glycaemia and glycosuria. Education is understood as guiding to independent coping with diabetes and better cooperation with medical staff. It is an inevitable and irreplaceable part of successful diabetes treatment. The thesis is aimed at mapping application of educational plans to care of diabetics. The thesis has a theoretical and a research parts. The theoretical part deals with information on diabetes mellitus, education in general and its specifics for diabetics. The research part involves a quantitative data collection method, namely observation and semi standardized interview. The research took place in a diabetology centre and in a diabetologist{\crq}s office. 10 diabetics, 6 men and 4 women participated. The observation was performed during a diabetic{\crq}s visit to a diabetologist{\crq}s office and involved 18 points divided into 7 areas aimed at the education process phase, education implementation form, education forms, diabetic{\crq}s theoretical and practical skills, educational environment and others. Interviews were performed after the medical consultations. The interview contained 37 questions, 18 of which offered choice of reply and possibility to ask an additional question. The remaining 19 questions were open. The interview questions focused on treatment regime, satisfaction, knowledge and skills of diabetics. The first goal was to find out how education benefits a diabetic. The second goal was to map whether diabetics can use the obtained information and skills in their everyday life. The third goal was to learn about educational forms and methods used by the diabetologist and in the diabetology centre. The fourth goal was to create an educational plan and test it in practice. The goals of the thesis were met. All the research questions were answered. The research part thus shows that education is beneficial for diabetics, they apply the obtained information and skills to their lives, the educational methods and forms are identical in the diabetology centre and at the diabetologist. The thesis may be utilized as evaluation of effectiveness of education performed for diabetics and the basic content of diabetes mellitus and education.
Public awereness about diabetes mellitus
KNÍŽOVÁ, Kateřina
Diabetes mellitus belongs to diseases frequently occurring in childhood and adulthood. Insufficient knowledge of this disease and an unsatisfactory compensation for diabetes leads to development of late complications that have a negative impact on one's, as well as the family's, life and create an economic problem for society as a whole. The thesis focuses on the main characteristics of the disease, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. Complications of the disease, including advice for patients themselves and their prevention are described in more detail. Social aspects (work inclusion of a diabetic, invalidity and reduced work capacity, driving of motor vehicles) are also emphasised. The research part containing 18 questions aims to find out to what extent the Czech public is informed about the problematic areas of this disease. It also assesses the feasibility of obtaining information from individuals of different ages and places of residence (city vs. village) regarding diabetes. These hypotheses were stated within the scope of the research: 1. Individuals older than 50 years of age are better informed about diabetes than individuals of a younger age. 1. Individuals living in a city have a better access to information concerning diabetes than individuals living in a village. The data was obtained from questionnaire research, in which respondents older than 18 years of age participated. The data collection took place in Bechyně Spa Ltd. 58 % of the resultant questionnaires were completed by women and 42 % by men.
Importance of self-monitoring of children with diabetes
PAPOUŠKOVÁ, Helena
In the research we focused on children treated in an endocrinological out-patient clinic. We addressed six respondents to participate in the qualitative research. Three objectives were set: C1: to ascertain how important for the patients the regular monitoring of glycaemia is; C2: to ascertain whether child patients are able to observe the therapeutic regime; C3: to ascertain whether providing parents, teachers, kitchen staff and instructors of spare-time activities with information has an effect on the care of children with diabetes.
Selfmonitoring of Type 1 Diabetes mellitus in adolescents
KORELOVÁ, Andrea
Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a chronic, lifelong disease. The younger the patient, the more seriously the disease affects his (her) childhood. The disease brings about a lot of changes, it involves the loss of freedom and independence. Diabetes makes the normal troubles of adolescence even more difficult. Adolescence is a hard stage of life for patients with the type 1 diabetes mellitus because it is a period when the compensation of diabetes is more difficult than in the previous and following stages of life. Regular self-monitoring is one of the crucial tasks. The selfmonitoring is important for the overall compensation of diabetes and also for the clinical results of treatment. Self-monitoring is the process of monitoring and measurement of one´s own glycemia and ketones in blood and sugar and ketones in urine. It enables the diabetic patient a better orientation in the disease and a certain level of independence. Self-monitoring helps parents gain confidence in cure of their children suffering from diabetes. The theoretical part of my thesis deals with the questions of the type 1 diabetes mellitus and the method of self-monitoring. The objective of the practical part was to survey the subjective view of adolescents with the type 1 diabetes mellitus on self-monitoring and the level of their self-reliance. I set hypotheses suggesting that adolescents perceive self-monitoring to be uncomfortable and cannot cope with the procedures independently. These hypotheses were not confirmed in my research. To get relevant data, I used the questionnaire method. I handed out questionnaires to young patients with diabetes aged 13{--}18 years. A letter for patients´ parents asking for their written consent with the research was attached to the questionnaire.
NUTRITION AND DIET IN PEOPLE WITH DIABETES
NOŽIČKOVÁ, Lenka
Diabetes is a set of related diseases in which the body cannot regulate the amount of sugar glucose in the blood. In a healthy person, the blood glucose level is regulated by several hormones, one of which is insulin. Insulin is produced by the pancreas, a small organ near the stomach that also secretes important enzymes that help in the digestion food. Insulin allows glucose to move from the blood into liver, muscles, and fat cells, where it is used as fuel. People with diabetes either do not produce enough insulin (type 1 diabetes) or cannot use insulin properly (type 2 diabetes), or both. In diabetes, glucose in the blood cannot move into cells, and it stays in the blood. This not only harms the cells that need glucose as fuel, but also harms certain organs and tissues exposed to the high glucose levels.
