Grimdark - a study of appearance and application of a new subgenre in modern fiction
VITEK, Michal
The theme of the thesis will be grimdark, grasped as a new subgenre of fiction, mainly associated with the Warhammer 40 000 universe. The thesis will focus primarily on analyzing the question of the possibilities of meaningfully defining this subgenre, tracing the ways in which these definitions are applied towards the Warhammer 40 000 universe, and the development of features that contribute to the definition of the subgenre in the timelines of fictional worlds. With a reflection on the media in which they are presented. This issue of sub-genre definition will be set within the framework of standard aesthetic categories and narratology. Furthermore, the thesis will address the occurrence of the given subgenre features in other selected universes. Both in literary, audio, film or videogame format, with an attempt to differentiate the subgenre delineation of grimdark from other subgenres and to analyze the possibility of adding fictions not yet labeled with this term under the wing of grimdark.
Concomitant Outgrowth Event
Prokop, Lukáš ; Cséfalvay,, András (referee) ; Mazanec, Martin (advisor)
The diploma project – a short animated film accompanied by an even briefer theoretical text – is in its whole a convoluted topology of themes and approaches supposedly enclosed in a single narrative guiding the viewer through its labyrinth. A mythologizing auto-fiction, thus, lies alongside attempts at a disintegration of the human-technic duality, the dislocation of purely ocular vision from the current notion of epistemology, or the realignment of our perception of GCI – all meticulously interpreted through a world-building experiment grounded in a strictly science-fictional (and theory-fueled) imagination.
Topos of artificial intelligence in 20th century American literature.
PODLAHA, Roman
The Diploma thesis is mainly focused on posthumanistic philosophical concepts present in American science fiction literature of 20th century. Stories selected are those where the key role is put on the presence of artificial intelligence. Thanks to the analysis and comparison of selected texts, the reader can easily recognize how classical humanistic concept of man is nowadays deeply transformed by the immersive use of hi-technology and, by extension artificial intelligence. The introduction is primarily concerned with basic terms and definitions of what we call philosophical posthumanism. The next part of the text is searching for the notion of "posthuman" in the most renowned American science fiction authors' works (Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, William Gibson, Richard Powers and more).

The ambiguity of the narrative structure in Daniel Keyes' Flowers for Algernon
Jelen, Vojtěch ; Higgins, Bernadette (advisor) ; Ženíšek, Jakub (referee)
This thesis aims to discuss the key narrative features in the short story and novel Flowers for Algernon through the lens of two different narrative frameworks. The first will focus on the traditionally established three-act structure widely recognised as standard in Western fiction. The second will analyse the work from the angle of kishotenketsu, the four-act structure of Oriental literature. The theoretical part will contain a brief description of both narrative structures, noting their main properties. In the practical part, the story will be analysed using both of the described frameworks to highlight the ambiguous nature of its plot progression. Info(VR)architecture
Ponomarevová, Daniela ; Janoščík,, Václav (referee) ; Mikyta, Svätopluk (advisor)
In my bachelor thesis, which I called Info(VR)architecture, I base on my previous projects, in which I have developed through symbolic-dystopian narratives a reflection about human mortality and the fear of losing control, and the influence and power of information of the internet on the state of our shared reality. I deconstruct and reunite these into new constellations in which I explore the relationship between virtual and physical reality and the human being.
Toxic Relationships
Rausová, Terezie ; Rodek,, Václav (referee) ; Rathouský, Luděk (advisor)
In my work I have been working for some time with topics such as anthropocene, parasitism, symbiosis and environmental anxiety. I search for and capture the socio-ecological situation. I ironize the self-destructive behavior of modern people in terms of endangering basic life functions and warn of poisoning the environment, which plays an irreplaceable role in the lives of future generations. My source of inspiration is science fiction stories, which often deal with apocalyptic vision. The starting medium for me throughout the study is painting, which I build on strong and fluorescent colors. Formally, the paintings are made of acrylic paint and spray on canvas. The output of the bachelor's thesis is a series of large-format paintings, supplemented by smaller formats, which should attract with their neon colors and at first glance draw the viewer into a toxic zone. The installation should worry the viewer and not leave you cold in connection with the position of man within the social and natural system.
