Perception of social stratification: Those "at the bottom" – do they deserve recognition?

Text focuses mainly on discursive formation of unequal social categories, symbolic boundary maintenance and social identities. Analysis of 30 interviews with working men and women of different education and social position presents a closer view on ascribed characteristics and attitudes towards social categories/groups regarded by interviewees as "at the bottom" - "“homeless people" and "low-income employees". Differences are interpreted particularly in regard to past experiences and social position of interviewees.

The paper reveals mechanisms of re/production of gender in/equalities in the families with caring fathers. It examines when gender equality is (or can be) achieved in families and what the relationship is between gender equality in the family and gender inequality in wider society.
