In the 19th and early 20th century the journeyman travels became an integral part of the training, a means of improving one’s income and a pre-requisite for becoming self-employed. In addition, they provided a better understanding of the everyday needs and customs in nearby and far-off foreign destinations and helped to bring the lifestyles of ordinary folk in various regions closer together.
