Speaking for the 'right' women: radical-right populism and women's representation in the European Parliament
Giovannoni, Beatrice ; Palacio Ludena, Maria Gabriela (vedoucí práce) ; Rodón, Toni (oponent)
This research investigates the convergence between feminism and radical-right populism in the field of women's representation in the European Union. Although previous research has explored how populist radicalright actors exploit feminist narratives to advance Islamophobic anti-immigration stances, little has been said about how feminist arguments contribute to radical-right populist attempts to represent women substantively. This is relevant because, through the representative process, populist radical-right parties construct specific views of women's identities, interests, and gender equality that are increasingly becoming part of the European political discourse. As the popularity of radical-right populist parties rises across Europe, so does their ability to use seemingly liberal narratives to leave the political fringes and enter the mainstream. Therefore, analysing the nature and the objectives of a potential convergence between feminism and radical-right populism is crucial to understanding which identities and interests would be advanced, marginalised, or erased if a populist radicalright form of feminism became dominant. This research aims to uncover 1) whether a populist radical-right form of feminism exists and what it may look like; 2) which goals populist radical-right parties pursue when they...
Female perspective on politics: comparative study between the Netherlands and Finland. (Critical discourse analysis w/ elite interviews. Comparing views on female representation and its progression w/ policy documents & media reports. )
ten Hulsen, Victoria Isabelle Luisa ; Palacio Ludena, Maria Gabriela (vedoucí práce) ; Escriba, Abel (oponent)
Female political representation differs significantly between countries. Patriarchal structures and gender biases that hinder women's representation are pervasive and can be identified in seemingly progressive governments, challenging claims of increased gender equality in the global North. This thesis explores the differences in female political representation in parliament between two popularly deemed progressive European countries: the Netherlands and Finland. It does so by adopting a novel approach and engaging with the top-down personal perspective of politicians within parliament. Using semi-structured elite interviews, this thesis focuses on the causes for the gap in female political representation between these countries while also discussing what the interviewees envision as possible improvements. The parliamentarians provided unique insights into how gender stereotypes, gatekeeping, and unpaid care work determine the level of women's political representation. The results indicate that female parliamentarians, next to having more role models, centred childcare and parental leave at the core of the policies to address the disparity in female representation between the Netherlands and Finland and increase female political representation overall. This thesis thus contributes to gender and...
What is the Worth of Highly Educated Female Migrants in the Labor Market of Barcelona?
Binte Alamgir, Samia ; Vergé, Tania (vedoucí práce) ; Palacio Ludena, Maria Gabriela (oponent)
Education is considered as one of the basic tools for migrants to be integrated in the labor market of host country. But does this theory applies equally for female migrants too? The biggest immigrant population is Spain comes from Latin America. They are almost equal in male and female ratio according to census data. But there is a common phenomenon about integration of these Latin American female migrant. Mostly, they are found in 'pink collar' job in labor market which does not need higher education. So, what happens to those women who are highly educated and have aspiration to be integrated in white collar job in Spain? Present data shows that there is an increase of educated migrants among women but why the number of women in labor market in those jobs is not increasing simultaneously? This paper aims to investigate why there are less representation of Latin American female migrants in 'white collar' job in Spain. This paper examines the thorny issue of female migrant integration with a qualitative method by interviewing 16 Latin American female migrants who are highly educated and currently working in Barcelona in a "white collar" job. To do further investigation and understand their challenges from the aspect of race and feminism, there was controlled ratio of participants who has darker...
The Promise of (In)Equality: A critical feminist analysis of socialist and neoliberal doctrines in the Czech Republic
Crema, Juliana ; Palacio Ludena, Maria Gabriela (vedoucí práce) ; Zielinska, Katarzyna (oponent)
This thesis seeks to bridge the gap between theory and lived experiences of women and the state in terms of social relations and policies. In order to accomplish this, a qualitative approach was taken in order to apply a theoretical foundation to lived experiences of events that occurred in the Czech Republic. A critical feminist lens was applied to primary sources such as constitutional documents and World Bank reports in order to unearth the impact of state-dictated policy upon the lives and choices of women. As a hypothesis-producing thesis these primary and secondary documents were read in a way that let a narrative of parallels between the Socialist regime of the late twentieth century and the neoliberal government of the early twenty-first century arise. This main comparison reflects upon the state-centered power of both eras and its influence upon the tensions between women's roles as mothers, labourers, and citizens. With the guiding questions of how and why gender matters, a critical feminist approach was taken in the research process and has informed the results. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
