NEW ON THE „OLD“ – Brno, Bratislavská - Stará Corner
Widholmová, Alžběta ; Mléčka, Jan (referee) ; Foretník, Jan (advisor)
When designing in socially segregated areas have basically two options. The first option is to pretend that there is no area of social exclusion and access to the draft as anywhere else. This option is very dangerous in promoting the extrusion of the current population, that you just simply can not afford to live in the new apartments. This option is out of the question until conditions change in society, otherwise it is a harbinger of further gentrification. The second option is therefore a kind of social engineering efforts and therefore sort of scenario, which stages the proposal development in society. This option hides perhaps even more dangers and questions than the first. The most important is perhaps that, if such a thing is actually capable architecture.
Gap options (třída Kapitána Jaroše, Brno, CZ)
Hanušová, Petra ; Widholmová, Alžběta (referee) ; Toman, Radek (advisor)
The inner block behind the Brno City Theatre is special for its liveliness. There are several services, parking and, above all, a lot of people shorten their journey here every day - the gap is not waiting to be filled, it serves more as a portal. In the design I am working with a site that is adjacent to the theatre's blind wall and currently serves only for parking. I am proposing housing elevated above the retained parking lot, working with the idea of neighborhood and relationships. I surround the housing with greenery and adapt the character of the block to pedestrians.
Gap options (třída Kapitána Jaroše, Brno, CZ)
Kusnierzová, Tereza ; Widholmová, Alžběta (referee) ; Toman, Radek (advisor)
This work aimed to explore the possibilities of infilling the gap on Kapitána Jaroše Street or identifying other lots within the adjacent inner courtyard, where interventions will be proposed to enhance the location's attractiveness and improve the quality of the environment. The chosen solution involved a lot in the gap and an adjacent, currently undeveloped plot within the inner courtyard. The aim was to support the main pedestrian movement directions through the area and into the inner courtyard by creating a new street. Along this street, two mixed-use buildings with predominantly residential functions were proposed in addition to including a café and a florist, which expand the range of services in the vicinity and contribute to the street's character; 15 residential units were created, offering peaceful living close to the city centre of Brno.
Radauti Municipal (Co)housing
Grosu, Gabriel Andrei ; Widholmová, Alžběta (referee) ; Toman, Radek (advisor)
Since the beginning of the Ukrainian invasion, the booming demand for accommodation within proximity to the border turned into a delicate housing crisis. This project investigates the current housing condition made available for the Ukrainian refugees while searching for the best way of addressing the sudden increase in the medium and long-term housing demand. The findings of the investigation along with the input from many consultations with Ukrainian war refugees were translated into developing a detailed architectural design for a municipal (CO)housing refugee camp in the city of Radauti.
The Care Community
Nasrollahzadeh Saravi, Yasaman ; Widholmová, Alžběta (referee) ; Muryn, Romea (advisor)
The aging population along with the growing demographic of urban settlements is one of the main challenges cities face, all over the world. As the elderly population is expected to increase significantly in the years to come, cities, which for most parts are designed and structured with the younger and working-age groups in mind, will have to address and adapt to challenges that follow this transition. Care for the elderly is divided into medical and social care domains. While now, most facilities aimed at this age group focus on the medical point of view, the social needs of this demographic are prominently not taken into account. As a result, senior citizens today, struggle with social exclusion and isolation which have been proven to cause serious health impairments. In addition, separating and relocating the elderly to senior facilities is usually not preferred among this age group and their families. Through understanding and analyzing this demographic, its demands, and challenges, this project aimed towards developing an urban strategy by creating different “care typologies” throughout the city of Brno, so that, by implementing these suggested typologies, the city as a whole will provide care for the elderly as a community rather than dis-placing this rising and fragile age-group to institutional care. These typologies were first determined by dividing the city of Brno into three main parts by considering certain parameters as influencing factors. Then, the different space programs were derived and structured through research and in-person interviews with two of the senior facilities in Brno. As a result, three main care typologies were introduced, namely, the care housing, the day care center, and the care community center. Lastly, locations were analyzed and selected for each typology as examples in the typologies’ individual urban regions. The care housing and the day care center typologies were then developed further into detailed architectural design.
