Comparative analysis of Vox and Partido Popular using the theory of institutionalization

This bachelor thesis deals with the institutionalisation of political parties and compares two Spanish parties - Vox and Partido Popular. The primary objective is to identify differences in functioning and structure between traditional and new parties. For this purpose, the approach of Harmel and Svåsand is chosen, which conceptualizes institutionalization as a process taking place in three dimensions - internal, external and objective durability. The paper first summarises the Spanish political system and its evolution in order to place the subsequent findings in a broader context. Afterwards, both Vox and Partido Popular and their institutional evolution in all three dimensions are individually presented. On this basis, the thesis then compares the institutionalisation of political parties. In doing so, it focuses on the evolution of the parties since their inception, the factors influencing their institutionalisation and the level of institutionalisation that both parties have achieved. The thesis uses qualitative and quantitative data, in particular analysis of documents, including party programme statements and statutes, financial reports, election results and opinion polls.
