Detecting map scales of old maps Abstract This diploma thesis falls within its focus to the field of cartometric analysis. It deals with the issue of detecting a map scale from chosen large or middle-scale old maps without the influence of cartographic projection. The aim of the thesis is to analyze and compare different methods that are used for map scale detection. Direct methods which use direct measurement from a map field are examined as well as indirect methods which detect a map scale as one of the plane transformation parameter. Robust statistical methods named M-estimators are applied on indirect methods during the compensation process in the form of a weight matrix and are supposed to suppress the influence of remote measurements on the resulting value. Mathematical implementation of these methods is another content of this work. Keywords: map scale, robust statistics, old maps, cartometric analysis
