The category of prepositions in the texts of Late Latin grammarians

This thesis deals with a category of prepositions and its processing in works of late antique Latin grammarians. It controls whether preposition definitions are sufficient for their recognition from other word classes and primarily focuses on differences between a prepositions category and an adverb category. Further, there is a presented creation of preposition category in Proto-Indo-European language, definitions of prepositions in modern Latin grammar books, and also in contemporary linguistic handbooks of modern languages.

The Saturnian verse

The first part is the summary of recent research which includes the summary of basic problems concerning the Saturnian verse and attempts at their solution. It discusses the issue of the interpretation of antique messages, preserved primary materials and the origin of the Saturnian. At length it deals with the metric structure of the Saturnian - systematically summarizes the existing theories (quantitative, accentual and other notions - isosyllabic, syncretic, and others) and tries to comprehend its principals and shortcomings. The following part focuses on the Czech verse, its principals and especially the problems with translating quantitative hexameter into the Czech language. It addresses the Czech quantitative, accentual and mixed, syllabic hexameter. The key part is a schematic analysis of individual literary Saturnian verses; verses from eposes Odusia by Livius Andronicus and Bellum Poenicum by Gnaeus Naevius, "exemplary Saturnian verse" Malum dabunt Metelli Naevio poetae and Naevius' epitaph. The analysis of the each verse consists of quantitative and accentual schemes and resulting metric scheme. The research is based firstly on the presumption that Livius Andronicus (during the translation of Odyssey into Latin) could have attempted to retain the rhythmic scheme of the original (Greek hexameter)...

The perfect tense of the Latin verbs prandere and cenare

This thesis deals with the perfect tense of the Latin verbs prandeo (prandere) and ceno (cenare). It presents an overview of the information about the perfect tense of these verbs contained in the works of ancient Latin grammarians and in modern literature. While dealing with the theoretical aspects of this issue, the thesis touches on the issue of the categories of aspect and voice in Latin. The thesis also deals with the interpretation of the instances of the perfect tense of the verbs prandeo and ceno in extant Latin texts. The main result of our investigation is the finding that the active participles pransus and cenatus cannot be regarded as exceptional cases.

Griko: cultural-linguistic analysis of the surviving Salentian dialect on the verge of Greek and Italian identity

This diploma thesis will focus on the Griko dialect, which is still spoken in some areas of Apulia and which is characterized by its ambiguity between the Greek and Italian language. It thus bears the remnants of Greek culture in southern Italy. The diploma thesis will consist of a theoretical and practical part: In the first part, the cultural-historical reality that defines the dialect will be described. This will be followed by a practical analysis of selected texts, their subsequent description and analysis by a comparative method. Lastly, the work will deal with the current socio-cultural situation of the dialect and its use. Prefix ex- u latinských sloves a jeho aspektová funkce Latin Verbal Prefix ex- in Regard of Aspect - disertační práce - Mgr. Martina Vaníková Summary The proposed thesis titled Latin Verbal Prefix ex- in Regard of Aspect is a pilot study that deals with the ways of expressing aspect in Latin, which is based on the detailed analysis of the functions of the verbal prefix ex- as one of the important components of this category. It also tries to find the method for the future research on the matter. In the theoretical part of the thesis the author gives summary of existing theories on aspect in general, with special attention given to the theories on aspect in the Czech and Latin language. The author defines the terms "aspect", "Aktionsart" and "situation type" at great length, and she particularly sets light to the term "telicity", distinguishing the "inherent telicity" from "maximizing". The practical part consist of: 1. a detailed analysis of all the occurrences of the indicative imperfect of the verbs with the prefix ex- from the corpus, which comprises of all well-preserved Latin texts from Plautus to Cicero; 2. an analysis of the indicative future and present tense forms of the selected verbs with the prefix ex-. Word order in Latin noun phrases with comparative and superlative adjectives

The bachelor's thesis deals with the word order of noun phrases with comparative and superlative adjectives in classical Latin prose. Firstly, it summarizes the main approaches to Latin constituent order. Subsequently, the nominal phrase and its constituents are treated. Afterwards, the work focuses on the internal ordering of noun phrases, mainly with adjectives, by means of pragmatic and semantic factors as described in the monographies of Olga Spevak. The functions of adjective grades are also discussed. The empirical part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of attributive adjectives in the comparative and superlative form as used in Cicero's De officiis ("On Duties"). The adjectives analysed are divided into three categories according to their position relative to the head noun and their pragmatic independence. Consequently, the last part deals with the word order rules of the adjectives excerpted and the factors which influence their position.

Analysis of Czech Translations of Caesar's Commentarii

This bachelor thesis deals with Czech translations of Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic War. Firstly it offers a quick overview of Czech translations throughout the history. The main focus of the thesis is on comparing the selected translations (i. e. those published from 1940's onward). It tries to capture the essence of each translation by appreciating its characteristic features, which set it apart. Each feature is corroborated by examples. The thesis also raises the question whether there is a need for a new Czech translation of Commentaries. Based on the collected evidence the question is answered in the affirmative. Last but not least the thesis strives to set right some misconceptions regarding the translations (e. g. the second and third releases of Ivan Bureš's translation are, indeed, not the same).
