The objective of the present thesis was to give an integral picture of a particular stage of relation between Arnost Muka, the Sorb patriot, and Adolf Cerny, the Czech promoter and sympathizer of Sorbs, who was considered a national revivalist by the Sorbs themselves, on the background of their correspondence. The stage in question is period between 1885 - 1896. The thesis covers the first stage of their friendship. It is based on a very comprehensive correspondence material, providing, however, reliable, although often emotionally coloured information about the Lusatia, Sorbs and the family life of both protagonists. By means of this information the development of Sorb national and cultural life towards the close of 19th century as well as the important role played therein by Muka and Cerny, can be well pursued. Based on so far rather unknown and rarely exploited correspodence deposited in personal funds of A. Muka (LA PNP) and A. Cerny (Archiv of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, archive SI) I gave a picture of their family and professional life, their scientific work and their share in Sorb national life. Some of the pieces of knowledge presented here have not been published so far. Cerny established written contact with Muka on March 9, 1885, when he asked him to provide a contribution to...

Introduction to Survival Analysis
Valenta, Zdeněk
Survival analysis is concerned with analyzing time-to-event data where the event of interest usually represents some type of “failure”. In clinical medicine, the event of interest may be e.g. death of a patient from well specified causes, autoimmune rejection of the graft by the transplant recipient or other type of graft failure in transplant studies. In certain situations, however, the true survival outcomes may not be observable, because we have observed a so called “censoring event” which prevented the event of interest from occurring. Such censoring event may represent, for instance, loss of a particular subject from follow-up, occurrence of administrative censoring, which typically takes place in clinical trials, or we may indeed observe other type of “failure”, e.g. death from fatal injuries rather than from cardiovascular causes which were of primary interest in a particular clinical trial. In this article we will stress the importance of a key assumption relating censoring process to survival outcomes and review principle univariate survival analysis methods for uncorrelated data. We will review popular models for analyzing univariate survival data, many of which enable us quantifying effect the prognostic variables independently exert on survival outcomes. Model examples will cover the classes of non-parametric, parametric and semi-parametric methods. We will also review underlying assumptions of individual models and stress the importance of using appropriate models in analyzing univariate time-to-event data.

Study identified several lifestyle-related risk factors for lung cancer incidence that appeared to reflect socio-economic changes in the post-Velvet Revolution Czech Republic. Observed association between lung cancer incidence and increased tomatoes and fresh vegetables consumption was an unexpected finding. Treatment for hypertension appeared to beneficially modify the effect of smoking. Gender differences in lung cancer mortality appeared to reflect gender-related lifestyle differences
