The Role of Therapist Adult Attachment Styles for the Therapeutic Alliance and Outcomes

This bachelor thesis examines the relationship between the therapist attachment, the therapeutic alliance, and treatment outcomes. The literature review section introduces the concept of attachment, specifically its theoretical framework, types, and ontogeny, especially in the context of attachment in adulthood. The next chapter focuses on attachment in psychotherapy and emphasizes the importance of the therapist's role in the psychotherapeutic process. The thesis also critically summarizes current findings regarding the association between therapist attachment, therapeutic alliance, and treatment outcomes. Last but not least, it draws attention to the limitations of previous studies and briefly mentions possible clinical implications. The research design examines the association between therapist attachment, client-rated therapeutic alliance, and client-rated therapy outcomes using the self-report measures Working Alliance Inventory - Short Revised, Outcome Questionnaire, and Relationship Questionnaire. The paper concludes by discussing the potential benefits as well as the limitations of the project.
