Chemical theories on the origin of life on Earth – an introduction to panel discussion
Raab, Miroslav
The question of the origin of life on earth is interesting for chemists, biologists and philosophers. The present text is a compilation of the most important chemical theories.
You could not step into the same river twice – rheology of materials
Raab, Miroslav
Rheology is typical interdisciplinary science combining chemistry, physics and mechanics. It can be introduced to the program of high schools as an example of cooperation between individual sciences. The lecture gives basic principles of rheology and their application in everyday life.
Program a kniha abstrakt konference P. M. M. Současné a budoucí trendy polymerních materiálů /23./
Raab, Miroslav ; Kotek, Jiří
Proceedings of the 23th Discussion Conference of Prague Meetings on Macromolecules, covering various aspects of science, technology, economy and ecology of polymeric materials. The conference balanced realistic approaches and visionary perspectives.
Modifikace izotaktického polypropylenu
Ličko, M. ; Jeníková, Z. ; Rybníček, J. ; Horník, J. ; Steidl, J. ; Raab, Miroslav
Injection moulded samples of polypropylene were used to study the effect of trigonal .beta.-phase and ethylene propylene rubber on mechanical-physical properties in respect to microstructure. The results were compared with pure isotactic polypropylene, .beta.phase induced by 0.33 weight percent of a nucleation reagent and 20 weight percent of EPM rubber increases the toughness of iPP. A substantial increase in toughness was observed by combining both additives resulting in spherolite refinement and reduction in amorphous content. However, the improvement in toughness was at the expense of the yield strength and modulus of elasticity.
Introduction to molecular gastronomy or talks with Mojmír
Raab, Miroslav
This popular lecture gives an introduction to molecular gastronomy as originally founded by Hervé This and Nicholas Kurti. This scientific discipline covers the gap between food technology and practical gastronomy. Some practical examples are used to illustrate this approach.
Polymers and people
Raab, Miroslav
This lecture offers a chronological survey of the most important inventions in polymeric materials and their inventors. Special attention is devoted to the role of serendipity that seemingly assisted to some great discoveries.
Acoustic emission during structure changesin semi-crystaline polymers
Krofta, Josef ; Převorovský, Zdeněk ; Blaháček, Michal ; Raab, Miroslav
Tested materials (polypropylene and its blends with polyethylene and other additives) exhibit large localized plastic deformation or necking, reaching hundreds of percent before failure. Image analysis procedure based on displacement of contrast markers on the surface has been usedto quantitatively evaluate axial and lateral strains and strain rates along the sample.
Strain field reconstruction of drawn polymer blends based on videorecording of stretching process
Převorovský, Zdeněk ; Krofta, Josef ; Blaháček, Michal ; Raab, Miroslav
Tensile tests of polypropylene and its blends with polyethylene and other additives have been recorded by digital camcorder. Acoustic emission (AE) was monitored during tests by two transducers attached to test samples, allowing linear location of AE**ces. Tested materials exhibit large localized plastic deformation - necking - reaching hundreds of percent before failure. Image analysis procedure is designed for quantitative evaluation of axial and lateral strains and strain rates along the sample
Polymer nanomaterials and nanoprocesses in polymers
Raab, Miroslav
Polymeric nanomaterials and nanoprocesses in polymers. Polymeric nanomaterials have been attracting great interest both from scientific and technological points of view. The basic ways to nanomaterials with polymeric matrix are reviewed together with the methods for their structural characterization. These methods are suitable also for the study of nanoprocesses in polymers.
The effect of compatibilizers on morphology and mechanical behaviour of polyetylene/polypropylene blends
Raab, Miroslav ; Ščudla, Jaroslav ; Baldrian, Josef ; Nezbedová, E.
Two ethylene-propylene copolymers differing in ethylene content and crystallinity were used as compatibilizers in blends of high-density polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene. The results suggest that the amorphous compatibilizer is superior to the other copolymer. It forms an interphase between the polyethylene and polypropylene domains thus improving the interfacial adhesion and material toughness.
