The Life and Work of the Pastors Alfred Kocáb and Jiří Doležal between years 1968 and 1989

This thesis deals with the life and work of two pastors of the Evangelical Church of the Czech Brethren, Alfréd Kocáb and Jiří Doležal, between 1968-1989. For this research the oral history method was used. The thesis contains a selection of interviews, which the author conducted with the pastors in spring 2013, and an interpretation of them according to the rules of the discipline of oral history. Preceding to the interviews available materials related to both pastors were studied, which are mainly documents in church and state archives, but also interviews with contemporaries of both pastors. The aim of this thesis is to create a platform to the pastors to speak, so that they can present their life and work according to their memories and comment various events, which constituted them. The two pastors represent two different wings in the ECCB in that period. In this way, these two concepts and accents of life and theology are entering into a mutual dialog. Through two life testimonies we can pars pro toto observe the life of the church and the country in the difficult years 1968-1989. The second aim of the work was to create new historical sources in the form of recordings of interviews and transcriptions of them.

The aim of the dissertation is to find an answer to the question of whether the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren (ECCB) in the years 1968-1989 could be considered "free" in any way. This work describes the life of the ECCB in that period and the ways of the freedom und unfreedom the ECCB enjoyed and formed. Thereby, the research is based on the careful analysis of documents of church and state archives and the results of ten author-led biographical interviews with then active pastors. Combining these methods and sources, the dissertation offers an innovative view on the ECCB in the period and provides new, deeper, and more personal insights into the processes of the time. The first four chronological chapters describe the situation and development of the ECCB during the socio-political liberalisation during the Prague Spring and during the years after the Warsaw Pact troops' invasion of Czechoslovakia, when the so-called "normalisation" began. The fifth chapter presents the main strategies that the church developed in reaction to the restriction of its freedom. The sixth chapter presents the perspective of two ministers of the ECCB on their contacts with the representatives of the state authorities in the form of a case study. Place of Encounter Travná between 1968 and 2004

This thesis describes place of encounter Travná from the time of its establishment to 2014. The main aim of this work is to describe what types of influences affected meetings of youth in Travná. The main sources used in this work are several interviews which were conducted with people who are connected to Travná in some way. Methods of oral history were used for the realization and processing of these interviews. Thanks to a wide variety of interviews across the investigated time period, we can find out a lot about the history of youth meetings. A large part of the thesis is devoted to pastor Adolf Petr, who was the founder of Travná and who influenced many other events connected with youth meetings. Other topics which arose from the interviews and which are important for the youth meetings are different types and displays of piety, work in Travná, ecumenical and foreign collaboration, time of Communism and social work in Travná. The author tries to put encounters in Travná before 1989 into the context of other young people church meetings in Czechoslovakia. Events from 1990s Travná are seen in the context of a newly formed legal and economic system.
