The UN's role in the peace process in the Middle East
Páleníková, Hedvika ; Havlová, Radka (advisor) ; Novotná, Yvona (referee)
After the Second World War a new actor appeared on the international scene, replacing not too successful League of Nations, the United Nations. The Question of Palestine has been on the agenda of the United Nations since the Organization's earliest days. The international community was forced to settle the situation in the Middle East. This issue is not a part of the history, on the contrary, it is still a question of immediate interest. The UN role is not limited to adopting resolutions, the scope of activities is broader, although it has not fulfilled all the original expectations. Peace in the Middle East is currently conditioned by resolving the fundamental issues. The thesis deals with four of them: the Palestinian refugee, the status of Jerusalem, the issue of securing water resources and the Jewish settlements. The UN resolutions reflect its reactions to the most important events in the Middle East conflict. However, the role of the UN in the peace process is minor than in the past, in some areas it has been yet irreplaceable, it serves as a significant platform for mutual dialog between conflict parties.
