Architecture as a Reflection of Modernization

The main aim of this thesis is to show how was the swift modernization of Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912) reflected in architecture. It describes how the information about western architecture spread in Japanese society and the mechanisms of this process. It explores the process of emulation of western models in the beginning and the following public reaction. It explains how were the western models adapted to local conditions. It shows the reflection of the social values in architecture. The aforementioned development is demonstrated mainly through school buildings.
