The political Status of the Orthodox Church in Contemporary Greece

This bachelor thesis deals with the Greek Orthodox Church and its influence on Greek politics. The thesis examines the historical development of the church, its current state (hierarchy and property of the church), the church's relationship to Greek national identity, and especially its role in the political context, focusing on the period after 1974, after the fall of the military junta, the last undemocratic regime in Greece. This bachelor thesis deals with the topic of the relationship of the Orthodox Church to the extreme right, religious minorities, the European Union and the influence of the Church on Greek education. It will also focus on topics that had defined Greek politics in recent years, such as the financial crisis or the coronavirus pandemic.
