Position of the Speaker of the House of Lords - UK

Bachelor's thesis Position of the Speaker of the House of Lords - UK deals with the topic of a role of Lord Speaker. Lord Speaker presides over proceedings in the House of Lords in the parliament of United Kingdom and is the chamber's ambassador as well. It is a relatively new office and was established under the New Labour's rule thanks to the Constitutional Reform Act of 2005. Historically, the office of Lord Chancellor used to encompass all three branches of government and was replaced by Lord Speaker in the capacity of the chairman of the upper chamber. In order to understand this change, the thesis examines the reform of the House of Lords in the twentieth century, emphasises on the reform and proposals of reform provided by Labour Party. The aim of the thesis is to analyze and characterise the role of Lord Speaker, its work and position within and outside House of Lords. The research is based maily on primary sources - especially chamber's documents and legislation.
