Czech as a "C" language

The aim of this work was to describe the politics of interpreting in European institutions and to define basic problems in interpreting with focus on Czech as a C language, or if possible to recommend potential improvements. The theoretical part is divided in two extensive chapters. The first one deals with organization of interpreting in European institutions, options to learn new languages, strategies of interpreter-engagement and their working conditions. The second chapter defines possible problems in interpreting from Czech. Those are personality of interpreter, Czech speaker, source text characteristics, hearer expectations, working environment, relay and retour, preparation materials and time. In the empirical part we had done a questionnaire research among the European institutions interpreters. It was then followed by interviews with three interpreters, in which we tried to clarify more complicated problems and to extend the questionnaire research. The research focuses on strategies of adding new working languages and on ways used for studying the Czech language. We also verified the possible problematic areas in interpreting that had been defined in the theoretical part. In the interviews we touched upon deeper causes of some problems, also we discussed some possible solutions to these problems....

Community interpreting for public service bodies dealing with foreign nationals

The thesis deals with the subject of Community Interpreting, which has not been explored very deeply until now. This subject has already been treated in the theses of Lucie Nakládalová (2005) and Jana Gutvirtová (2008), but the presented thesis offers a different point of view to the subject concerned. It is exploring the situation of foreigners coming from Western Europe, namely French and German speakers, who live in the Czech Republic on a more or less long term basis, but who have not mastered the Czech language at all or well enough. The theoretical part of the thesis is devoted to the definition of Community Interpreting, the range and specifics of its application, and to the description of the situation in some countries inside and outside Europe. The Czech Republic is especially accentuated, including the study of the number of foreigners living on the Czech territory and the principles of their integration. The empirical part targets the specific authorities and health centres that get in touch with foreigners, including the experiences of their staff acting as ad-hoc interpreters. This thesis also contains a survey carried out among German and French speaking foreigners, focusing on their personal experiences with overcoming the language barrier with as well as without an interpreter.

Options and application of language animation in interpreters' practice

The main objective of this thesis is to enquire and describe the problem of language animation and to ascertain whether it is possible to describe it as a specific mode of interpreter's practise. The Analysis of options and application of language animation is based on the assumption that the interpreter is an expert in intercultural communication and also that language animation is one of the methods to develop intercultural communication. Our next assumption is that an effective intercultural communicatin is one of the basic conditions to survive in the world of the present day. The thesis results in definitions and proves of a number of statements about the signification of application of language animation in interpreter's practise in order to obtain an option to develop intercultural competence of participants in intercultural groups.
