Language and National Identity. The Case of Language Policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The main objective of the thesis: "Language and National Identity. The Case of Language Policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina" is to demonstrate how language has been used as an instrument of national identity formation - ethnic or territorial - on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is achieved by the description of laws, foremost constitutions, concerning the use of language and by putting these laws into the context of the debate on the relationship between language and national identity in Bosnia and Herzegovina. One of the principal assumptions in the thesis is that this debate is closely linked to a similar one which was developing in former (socialist) Yugoslavia and even in the 19th century. The thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter one introduces the theoretical framework for the description of the language-national identity relationship. It defines the concept of nation, nationalism and national identity, their division into ethnic and territorial and describes the influence of language on development of such identities, especially in the case of language-based ethnic nations.
