Quantitative composition changes of sex pheromone in Anastrepha fraterculus depending on age

Males of South American fruit fly Anastrepha fraterculus form leks and release sex pheromone to attract females during the reproductive behavior. The aim of my diploma thesis was to collect samples of volatiles released by variously old males, subsequently to analyze and to determine the changes in the quantitative composition of the sex pheromone depending on age. The volatiles were trapped on adsorbent, eluted with hexane containing internal standard and analyzed by gas chromatography with mass detection. Males release twenty volatiles, including fourteen terpenes: α-pinene, camphene, -pinene, myrcene, Δ3-carene, limonene, (Z)--ocimene, (E)--ocimene, aromadendrene, trans-α-bergamotene, (Z)-β-farnesene, (Z,E)-α-farnesene, germacrene D, (E,E)-α-farnesene; one aldehyde: nonanal; two alcohols: (3Z)-non-3-en-1-ol, (3Z,6Z)-nona-3,6-dien-1-ol and three lactones: suspensolide, anastrephin a epianastrephin. From the list of named compounds there were proved antenal activity of six compounds in previous work, namely trans-α-bergamotene, (Z,E)-α-farnesene, (E,E)-α-farnesene, (3Z)-non-3-en-1-ol, (3Z,6Z)-nona-3,6-dien-1-ol and epianastrephin.
Determination of volatile isoprenoids as water stress markers of spruce resistance against bark beetle

Isoprenoids are important components of conifer resin and represent an important part of constituted defence system against herbivores and pathogens. Drought is one of the most important factors that influences the tree physiology and resitance. Due to decreased turgor of resin canal cells, the water insufficiency affects the pressure of the resin and thereby the ability of trees to physically prevent pathogen or herbivore invasion by effective outpouring of the resin. In addition, drought can also change the resin composition and thus can influence the quality of volatiles emitted by the tree. The Norway spruce, Picea abies, is the predominant species of production forests in moderate climate zone. Bark beetles, Ips typographus, represent the most important pest species of spruce. In general, pioneer bark beetles use host volatiles to orient themselves toward the tree suitable for colonization and in many species host volatiles synergize bark beetle aggregation pheromones. Thus the host volatile composition could affect significantly host colonization. Analysis of flower scents Clusia blattophila

South American plant Clusia blattophila, growing on Nouraghes of French Guiana, produces relatively large amounts of volatile substances in the fragrance of its flowers. C. blattophila is dioecious plant with different flowering time of monosex flowers Male flowers bloom for one night, while female flowers bloom two nights. The volatiles were adsorbed to the adsorbent and washed out with hexane with internal standard. Analysis was performed by two-dimensional gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. The aim of my thesis was to determine the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of flower scents of both sexes. I also studied, whether there are differences in production of the major fragrance component, acetoin, during the first night of blooming. The flower fragrance is complex blend of volatiles. In total, 43 different chemicals were identified. Ceratitis fasciventris, Ceratitis anonae and Ceratitis rosa are polyphagous agricultural pests originating from African continent. Their behaviour is heavily altered by pheromones. Insect chemical communication channels are species-specific, represents taxonomic and reproduction barriers. Taxonomy of this group (so-called Ceratitis FAR complex) is unclear. Therefore new chemical approaches along with genetic tests for identification of entities within the cryptic species FAR complex are being developed. To study multi-component mixtures of male volatiles originating from the three mentioned fruit fly species, comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time- of-flight mass spectrometer (GC×GC-TOFMS) was used. A number of compounds were identified, out of which 23 were found to be distributed and shared among the studied species, 11 out of these were present in all three species. Analyses of male pheromone volatiles, using gas chromatography combined with electroantennographic detector (GC-EAD) revealed 4 common compounds with antennal activity shared among three studied species: methyl (E)-hex-3-enoate, 6-methylhept-5-en-2- one, linalool, and methyl (2E,6E)-farnesoate. Linda Arbanová, Ph.D. Abstract: In this bachelor work the author applies herself to the project teaching of Art lessons. She prioritizes two main educational aims. She chooses a topic and prepares "The Meadow" project. She is succesful at its realization. This theme is enough rich in the impulses for visual work in Art lessons and it infuses well the other subjects. The author makes the project on the base of the School Education Programme for the second year. Her choice of graphic technologies goes with it - drawing, painting, collage, frottage, muchlage, making plastics, objects etc. The whole project consists of eight parts. Each one of them contains a different graphic problem. The description of all graphic activities are completed with the visual documentation, the pupil's reflection and the author's own as well. In the ending of her work she compares the development of children's personality in the class with the growing plants on the meadow. In this paper, I review our recent results on the trail-following communication in the Neotropical termite Glossotermes oculas (Serritermitidae) and the defensive chemistry of the African termite Psammotermes hybostoma (Rhinotermitidae). These findings belong to our current project focused on chemical ecology of critical termite genera from families Rhinotermitidae and Serritermitidae.
