The principles of plant architecture studies and their application to herbs

Plant architecture deals with the structure of the plant body and its dynamics. It mainly uses the characteristics of stem branching. In my work, I provide an overview of several concepts of plant architecture that have been applied to herbaceous plants, demonstrating how the principles of growth architecture can be utilized in plant ecology. These concepts include the bud bank, Corner's rule and reiteration. The bud bank has been defined as an alternative to the seed bank, where in perennial plants, the above-ground biomass is restored after seasonal dormancy or disruption from specialized organs carrying buds. The Corner's rule describes a correlation between the size of plant organs, and the size of the apical meristem of the stem plays a crucial role in this correlation. The size of the apical meristem determines the size of leaves, their number on the annual increment, the size of inflorescences, and consequently, the production of seeds. Reiteration examines how the branching of a plant is influenced by disturbances or suboptimal growth conditions. These three concepts are interconnected and can shed light on the ecology of herbaceous plants regarding their survival strategies in ecosystems with repeated disturbances. Species traits determining species composition on abandoned fields

Though succession is a widely studied process, there are only a few reports dealing with changes in plant functional types in the course of succession. Even fewer studies are dealing with agricultural, wet meadows, which are under continuous impact of mowing. The aim of this work is to fill this gap. The studied area is situated in south part of CHKO Slavkovský Les (region of Karlovy Vary, West Bohemia). In previous works grasslands on arable field after 15, 35 and 55 years after abandoned and continual grasslands in last 100 years were detected from historical agriculture maps. The releves on all types of grassland were made and the species pool was investigated. I this work I investigate the functional types and live-history traits of these species and I also look for Ellenberger values and changes of abiotic environment. The result suggests that the late - successional species are long-lived and have slower live cycle (they mature later). Their seeds are less persistent and have worse dispersal ability. Their seedlings are more viable and the species invest more to aboveground biomass than to underground. Late-successional species also flower earlier and shorter time, what seems to be an adaptation to mowing. I found no relationship between successional age in which the species occur and seed mass,...
Clonal integration of Agrostis stolonifera in heterogeneous soil environment

Clonal plants may be able to cope with spatial heterogeneity due to the physiological integration of ramets. Previous studies demonstrated that benefits of clonal integration increase with patch contrast between individual ramets. However, the same magnitude of contrast may be perceived differently in rich and poor environments. According to the theoretical work of Caraco and Kelly (1991), I expected these benefits to be the greatest in overall poor conditions and high between-patch contrast. To test this hypothesis, I conducted experiments with pairs of ramets of a stoloniferous grass, Agrostis stolonifera, grown in variously nutrient rich conditions. The experiment with pairs of ramet of similar developmental age showed only very weak effect of integration on growth of ramets, although integration significantly improved survival of ramets and also affected root-shoot ratio of ramets. Nevertheless, there were considerable benefits of integration in the experiment with developmentally older mother ramets and their daughter ramets. Contrary to the predictions, the benefits of integration were bigger in rich conditions and they decreased with increasing between-patch contrast. Urgent and follow-up measures in case of chlorine leakage - a retrospective analysis of past cases

This thesis deals with the urgent and follow-up measures in case of chlorine leak and a retrospective analysis of past cases. Chlorine is a widely used toxic gas. It is known from history as the first practically used warfare agent. Today, it is an important chemical raw material that is used widely in industry. It is also commonly transported by road and rail. It is one of the substances whose leakages occur very often. The objective of this paper is to assess the impacts of chlorine leakage on the lives and health of people and to provide an overview of urgent and follow-up measures in case of chlorine leakage in the perspective of the integrated rescue system and the general public. In addition, to locate, describe and analyze past cases. The theoretical part contains information about chlorine, the principles of behaviour of the population in case of an accident with chlorine leakage and an overview of measures undertaken at the site of chlorine leakage. Through studying available literature and resources on the Internet, overview of major chlorine leakages in the Czech Republic as well as abroad has been created. Selected events are described in detail. The practical part simulates, using computer programme called TerEx, a chlorine leakage from a water treatment plant in Písek, South Bohemia. To compare the results, several model situations were created with varying amounts of chlorine leaked at different times of accident and atmospheric conditions. A specific example is used to assess the risks to people living near the plant and to outline the urgent and follow-up measures.
The specific approach to diagnostic imaging methods in patients with diabetes mellitus

Diabetes mellitus occurs as a result of absolute or relative lack of insulin. It is a chronic disease which can lead to damage of other systems and organs. Number of patients with diabetes mellitus undergoing medical examinations or interventional therapy by the diagnostic imaging methods has been increasing. It brings higher demand on technical parameters of the methods and more exact work of medical staff. Examinations connected with administering contrast media can cause many complications to these patients and the routine examination can be changed into the dangerous one. The position of a radiological assistant has become more responsible. The aim of this Bachelor´s work was to outline diagnostic options while examining patients with diabetes mellitus and consider using diagnostic imaging methods as the administration of diagnostic contrast media can be risky for the patients. Twenty six per cent (236 patients) out of 918 patients with diabetes mellitus type 1 or type 2 who visited the Diabetological Centre and the Department of Radiology of the Hospital in České Budějovice were examined by some of the diagnostic imaging methods. Adult diabetic patients underwent these radiological examinations: 188 skiagraphies of lungs, 119 skiagraphies of skeletons and 18 examinations under skiascopic control. Forty-four patients were examined by the sonography, 10 by the mammography, 110 by the computed tomography, 9 by the magnetic resonance and 10 patients by the angiography. Most diabetic patients were examined by common skiagraphy of arms and legs, sculls, vertebral columns due to injuries, fractures and degenerative changes. Skiagraphies of heart and lungs were indicated before and after operations or they preceded applying an insulin pump. The other numerous group was made up by patients with tumours. They were mostly examined by computed tomography. Fifty-seven patients developed complications caused by diabetes. The examinations of carotid arteries, cerebral arteries, arteries and varicose veins in the legs were carried out by sonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance. In six cases diagnostic angiography was followed by percutaneous transluminal angioplasty. The use of contrast media in 64 patients was also considered. In all cases non-ionic contrast media of low or medium osmolarity in the volume of 80 {--} 125 ml were used. The findings compared with those presented in literature proved the hypothesis that radiological assistant work requires a specific approach towards the diabetic patients.
