This bachelor thesis analyses the female characters in the prose Maiden and Modest by the Portuguese Renaissance poet and novelist Bernardim Ribeiro. The novel is shrouded in ambiguity regarding its various editions and surrounded by legends about the author's life. In my thesis, I have focused on the distinct pro-woman perspective that can be observed in Maiden and Modest. The theoretical part of the thesis provides a summary of the historical and literary circumstances of the work's creation, including a chapter on the position of women in European society during the Renaissance. In the methodological part of the thesis there is an outline of the theory of literary character analysis, which I have applied to examine the female characters in the practical part. In it, in addition to a comprehensive comparison of female and male characters, there is also an analysis of the motif and meaning of beauty in the novel. It then concludes with a comparison of Bernardim Ribeiro's depiction of women with the way Renaissance women used to live in Europe and especially in the Iberian Peninsula.
