A Biographical Study of Vida Neuwirthova: The Influence of Family Heritage on her Artistic Life and Work
Hradecká, Markéta ; Wohlmuth Markupová, Jana (advisor) ; Houda, Přemysl (referee)
A BiographicalStudy of VidaNeuwirthova: The Influence ofFamilyHeritage on herArtistic Life and Work Using biographical methodology within contemporary historic studies, this thesis aims to present interpretations of life events as they were understood by the main subject of this research - Vida Neuwirthova- based on further analyses and interpretations of oral- historical interviews and other sources. Vida Neuwirthova is known to the public as a popular actress in the famous film Tri veterani (1984), and a dramatic shortcut in the understanding of her life events has influenced her current media image. Detailed biographical study reveals that the core of her life story is based on the discovery early in young adulthood of her Jewish heritage from her paternal family line. This important change in the understanding of her identity influenced the way she activated her artistic performance during the so-called "late normalisation"of the 1980s, founding the children's theater Feigele within the local Prague Jewish community. This period of time was characterized by an authoritarian state regime with a declared antisemitic ideology which tried to suppress and/or assimilate any signs of Jewish identity. In my thesis, I explore a possible change of meaning that Vida Neuwirthova provides in a retrospective...
The functions of comment clauses "you know" and "you see" and their Czech translation counterparts
Hradecká, Markéta ; Brůhová, Gabriela (advisor) ; Malá, Markéta (referee)
The subject of the present paper is an analysis of two formally similar comment clauses (CCs henceforth) you know and you see with the help of a parallel corpus InterCorp. First, the focus is put on their pragmatic functions; it is attempted to find out whether they perform all the functions that can be realized by you-oriented CCs as identified and characterized by Povolná (2010), i.e. whether they can be found both as appealers and empathizers, inform markers and monitors, and whether they prefer a certain sentence-position. Second, the present paper studies the Czech translation counterparts of the selected CCs; it attempts to offer a summary of the strategies concerning the translation of the CCs into Czech and to identify their most typical Czech equivalents. It also examines to what extend the type of the pragmatic function influences the translation. The theoretical part summarizes the history of the phenomenon of CCs and characterizes and describes two approaches generally applied to CCs: CCs as ordinary clause constituents (Quirk et al. (1985)) vs. CCs as discourse markers (Povolná (2010)). Also offered is the treatment of the equivalents of CCs in the Czech grammars (Cvrček et al. (2010), Daneš, Hlavsa et al. (1987) and Karlík and Grepl (1998, 1999)). The methodological part summarizes...
The Indefinite Article as a Signal of the Countable Use of Uncountable Nouns
Hradecká, Markéta ; Brůhová, Gabriela (advisor) ; Dušková, Libuše (referee)
The Indefinite Article as a Signal of Countable Use of Uncountable Nouns The present thesis deals with the role of premodification in the countability of nouns. More specifically, it concentrates on the dual class nouns, i.e. nous that are used both countably and uncountably. The aim of the thesis is to determine whether the presence of premodification results in the countable use of dual class nouns. Also, the semantics of the premodifiers is taken into account. The theoretical part of the thesis summarizes information from grammar books and describes the category of countability. All of the types of nouns, i.e. countable, uncountable and dual class, are characterized. Semantic classification of adjectives is included, too, as adjectives are the most frequent noun class in terms of premodification. The empirical part of the thesis concentrates on the analysis of specific examples and aims to decide the impact of the presence of premodification on the dual class nouns. For these purposes, three nouns were chosen (difference, interest, language) and fifty instances of each noun were excerpted from the British national corpus. Each of the instances was assessed in terms of countability, in the case of difference the semantics of premodifiers was determined (this step was eliminated in the case of the...
