Čapek's Apocryphal Tales in Russian Translations

The thesis deals with a comparative analysis of existing Russian translations of selected apocrypha of Karel Čapek with religious themes. In the theoretical part, the thesis focuses on the background of the creation of Čapek's apocrypha, its description and the position of the Apocryphal Tales in the context of the author's work. It also presents a description of the literary apocrypha as the genre and its tradition in Czech and Russian literature. For the purpose of evaluating Russian translations, this thesis focuses on the topic of Russian religiosity, its history and more precisely how Orthodox religiosity as a cultural reality is reflected in literature. The practical part deals with the comparative analysis of the translations of Čapek's apocrypha Holy Night by Faina Grimberg, Viktoriya Kamenskaya and Oleg Malevich, and Martha and Mary by Natalya Arosyeva. The comparative analysis is preceded by a characteristic of each of the selected apocrypha from the thematic and linguistic point of view. The practical part includes an attempt to reconstruct the translation tendencies and to evaluate the compared Russian translations on the basis of the analysis of individual translation solutions.
