Cooperation between German and Czech far-right parties after 1989. From the anti-German sentiment of the SPR-RSČ to the Czech-German friendship of the DSSS
Prokůpková, Vendula ; Charvát, Jan (advisor) ; Mareš, Miroslav (referee) ; Dlouhý, Miloš (referee)
The thesis topic is the cooperation between the Czech and German far-right. The author focuses on the cooperation of Czech and German extreme-right parties from 1989 to 2019. The thesis aims not only to describe the contacts of the respective parties but also to explore the logic of the relations between the Czech and German extreme right. Adopting the theoretical framework of the Discursive theory of Essex school, the author proceeds to a detailed analysis of the discourses of Czech extreme-right parties about Germans and Germany; she traces back the transformations of the original anti-German discourses and the origins of these changes. Against the background of these processes, she explores the transformations of the "conditions of possibility" that make Czech-German cooperation "conceivable" for both Czech and German extreme-right parties. The author explores the changes in the discursive conditions that allow Czech-German friendship to be "rationalised" and justified despite the contradictory positions on the issues of the Czech-German past. The author analyses the anti-German discourse of the SPR-RSČ in the 1990s and examines the circumstances of the SPR-RSČ's alleged contacts with the German Die Republikaner. Further parts of the thesis are devoted to the relations between Dělnická strana...
Formation and functioning of single-party governments under the conditions of proportional voting system
Tesár, Dominik ; Němec, Jan (advisor) ; Dlouhý, Miloš (referee)
The text deals with the formation and functioning of single-party majority and minority governments in democracies with proportional voting systems. It focuses on the conditions and circumstances of formation of such governments and on the aspects of political system which affect these processes - specifically on party systems that use the Sartori´s typology, on particular settings and effects of voting systems and on legal and customary rules of government formation, especially considering the relations between the government and parliament. Subsequent case studies are dedicated to particular instances of single-party governments in European Union countries (Spain, Portugal, Slovakia and Sweden) in the 21st century and to the circumstances of their formation. It is concluded that majority single-party governments are formed under the conditions of regular proportional voting system in moderate pluralism in the case of voters being inclined in a certain direction. The magnitude of constituencies is significantly influential in these cases. Minority single-party governments are formed in political cultures where it is acceptable, when no party wins an absolute majority of parliament seats, and if - thanks to the party system or to the rules (like negative parliamentarism or constructive vote of no confidence) and customs of government formation and dissolution - there is no possibility or need of forming a coalition government.
Myth Julius Fučík. Disputes about his life and work in historical context.
Suchá, Hana ; Dvořáková, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Dlouhý, Miloš (referee)
This master thesis is a result of historical analyses of past interpretation of Julius Fučík. Attention is focused on how the cult of Julius Fučík was built, how was his image changing and how this contributed to maintain communist ideology. For better understanding of the whole issue, this thesis describes Fučík's work, especially his most famous artwork Notes from the Gallows, which is important for understanding manipulations with Julius Fučík's legacy. It also examines how changing political situation transformed his role from hero to traitor and collaborator. As a counterbalance, complex expert studies dealing with Fučík's case are introduced. The end of the thesis is focused on the 70th anniversary of Fučík's death in the year 2013 in a perspective of contemporary media. This documents today's social debate which no longer deals with the question of guilt but is rather targeted on Fučík's literary output.
Internet in activating czech extremist far right movements
Miňovská, Veronika ; Rataj, Jan (advisor) ; Dlouhý, Miloš (referee)
The primary focus of this Master's thesis is the role of Internet and above all various social networks in activating Czech extremist far right movements. The thesis analyses the way modern means of communication streamline the spreading of socially marginal ways of thinking and the way these technologies help bypassing the media blockage often imposed on the activities of these movements, as well as the repressive police force, the power of which is circumscribed within the partially anonymous realm of Internet. A part of this work is also dedicated to an ideology based categorisation of the various branches of right wing extremists. This division is then supported by specific quotes published by these groups on the Internet. The groups that are given the most prominence include the Workers' Party of Social Justice, the Workers' youth, the National Resistance and the Autonomous nationalists.
Founding elections campaign analysis: Czechoslovakia in 1920, 1946 and 1990
Pařízková, Nikola ; Němec, Jan (advisor) ; Dlouhý, Miloš (referee)
The thesis deals with founding elections in Czechoslovakia in 1920, 1946, and 1990. A typical mention of these elections would describe them simply as the first elections after a regime change, and go no further. This diachronic analysis, based on elections campaigns as recorded in party-aligned newspapers, attempts to depict the broader aspect of founding elections and recapture the dynamic processes typical for such transition periods. Election campaigns are strongly influenced by the special character of founding elections. Campaigning not only reflects recent changes in the society but also formulates demands on its future development. Perceptions of the current situation reflect mutual relationships in between parties. The resulting character of election campaigns is a combination of these factors, plus others such as the media scene or the general mood in the society. The thesis thus tries to understand how political subjects behave in their founding election campaigns. Even though this behaviour varies wildly depending on background conditions, all political parties tend to focus their campaigns around the future course of the country.
The crisis of multiculturalism in Europe; contemporary integration of minorities tendency.
Le, Hana ; Rataj, Jan (advisor) ; Dlouhý, Miloš (referee)
In European context a concept of multiculturalism is a very actual and discussed topic. In recent years, post-war recruitment of cheap labour force, mostly from non-European countries, resulted in a crisis of European majority and immigrant minority coexistence. The main task of the Bachelor thesis is to answer following questions: Why the idea of multiculturalism cannot work in practice and why it is necessary to focus on the integration of minorities. The thesis is structured into four chapters. In first two, theoretical bases of concept of multiculturalism and of national interest are analysed. Third and fourth chapters deal with current issues concerning coexistence of people from different cultures and tendency of the immigrant integration. The thesis balances between the degree of tolerance towards minorities, defense of national values and tendency to build a global monoculture.
Local Elections in 2010: the Case of Ceske Budejovice
Okrouhlý, David ; Dvořáková, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Dlouhý, Miloš (referee)
The goal of this thesis is an analysis of local elections in 2010 in Ceske Budejovice. I try to answer the question, which specific conflicts in the period 2006 - 2010 destabilized the situation in the town council and why the Civic Democratic Party supported other representatives to dismiss the mayor. From this perspective, it is important to determine if there was created an "opposition" group within the Civic Democratic Party in the observed period, which voted together with the opposition parties in the town council. Another question is, how intra-party conflicts reflected the electoral programs of the main parties and if the conflicts had an impact on the results of local elections in 2010.
Initiative D.O.S.T. as a radically conservative challenge of present
Kříhová, Dominika ; Rataj, Jan (advisor) ; Dlouhý, Miloš (referee)
This thesis focuses on the analysis of initiative D.O.S.T., currently one of the most important Czech extreme-right groups. D.O.S.T. comes with a radically conservative critique of current concepts and direction of democracy, yet she managed to reach support among political parties accepted as legitimate and also influential public figures. The work is based on the assumption, that the main reason for this is that the initiative despite being extremely right-wing organization, highlights also real deficits of democracy. Therefore it can be seen as a challenge of present. The aim of this paper is to analyze critically this challenge by mentionning the initiative in all relevant contexts. The paper therefore deals firstly with the intellectual and political roots of its founders in the extreme right-organization called Právo a Spravedlnost. After it analyzes the initiative itself, its manifesto, activities, the main problematised issues and linkages with other political forces. In conclusion, the papers considers the perspective of eventual genesis of a new political party established by the initiative D.O.S.T.
