Music metaphors in Czech and Japanese
Davidová, Anna ; Kanasugi, Petra (advisor) ; Tirala, Martin (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on musical metaphors in Czech and in Japanese languages used for description of music. In particular on musical metaphors used by music critics in Czech and Japanese music magazines. Metaphorical expressions describe figurative concepts that cannot be described in any other ways than by metaphorical expressions. The thesis focuses on descriptions of emotions and impressions induced in listeners by music, which are subsequently used for description and review of the music itself. The aim of this analysis is the comparison of usage of the examined metaphors in two absolutely different languages and cultures. Theoretical part of the thesis addresses research on conceptual metaphors and music. Practical part of the thesis is based on reviews of the music critics written in Czech and Japanese music magazines about classical music. Chapter 1 presents the introduction to the topic of the thesis and the motivation for the research. In Chapter 2 I focus on the theory of conceptual metaphors, relation of conceptual metaphors to emotions and music theory. In addition, I also explain in more details the main topic of the thesis. Chapter 3 consists of the research itself and its results, which means the Czech and Japanese metaphors used in the reviews and their comparison. In this chapter I...
Dismissing Art
Davidová, Anna ; Štefková, Zuzana (advisor) ; Klimešová, Marie (referee)
(EN) Negation, in its many shapes and forms, is an integral part of the history of twentieth-century art. If we look at the world through the dialectical logic of the ever-changing struggle between theses and antitheses, art too comes out as a result of the clash of two inseparable counterparts. Creation is destruction, just like destruction is creation. This diploma thesis tries to explore the broad topic of negation by defining two main interests, which are the topics of destruction and dropping out of the art scene. It sees both cases as a way of revolting against the position of the artist and art in the consumer society of the West. The text handles the phenomenon of destruction in art through multiple examples of artistic movements and the social context after the Second World War and especially during the 1960s, when many artists tried to work with the potential of destruction in art. In the final part devoted to leaving the artistic milieu, the possibility of simultaneously being and not being part of the world of art and the (im)possible future of art in times of climate crisis is explored with the help of the example of Slovak post-practice artist Radim Labuda. Key words: negation in art, destruction art, anti-art, dematerialisation, 20th century art, contemporary art, political art,...
Jana Skalická: her work and its reflection in photography
Davidová, Anna ; Klimešová, Marie (advisor) ; Rakušanová, Marie (referee)
(EN) As a subject to my bachelor's thesis I chose the work of Czech artist Jana Skalická (1957-2015), who started her artistic career in the field of tapestry and textile art, but over time she found the alternative in a quite unusual material - plastic foil, which she considered as more suitable for her aims. She developped her own technique and transformed the plastics by ironing it or stitching it together on a sewing machine. From the hanging plastic tapestries she moved to the three-dimentional objects and installations using other materials such as iron, wood, rocks or different types of plastic matter. The artist was active during the period of 1980s and the first half of 1990s. The thesis is structured on the basis of several topics that can be related to Jana Skalická's work and at the same time the artworks are mentioned in chronological order. The chapters are accompanied by selected exhibitions as well as the examples from the historical artistic context. The art made by Jana Skalická was of ephemeral nature, none of it survived to the present time and the only way how to perceive it is via photography and a few videos. The last chapter is therefore discussing the matter of the interpretation of the artworks based on the photography. Key words: Jana Skalická, plastic, modern tapestry,...
