Do Women Understand the Risks Connected with the Preterm Birth?
CRHOVÁ, Tereza
Do women understand the risks connected with the preterm birth? The main source of information for expecting women are prenatal clinics, where they should learn about the risks of preterm birth and what to do in a case of troubles. The theoretical part of my paper contains learnings about preterm birth, its risks, causes, diagnostical and therapeutical possibilities, about nursing and consequences for newborns. The practical part focuses on awareness of pregnant women and assessment of the quality of information by women who have given birth prematurely. To address the issue I used a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The quantitative part of my research took the form of a questionnaire given to pregnant women at prenatal clinics. The qualitative part of my research was in the form of semi-structured interviews with women who have given birth prematurely. There were 6 objectives and therewith related hypotheses and research question. The objective of this thesis was to find out wheather pregnant women are informed about the issues of preterm birth well enough and wheather women, who have given birth prematurely, were informed in prenatal clinics sufficiently. Another objective was to make an educational material for mothers-to-be containing information about preterm birth and another educational material for midwives on how to educate women about issues they might face in this area. All the objectives were accomplished. The hypothesis claiming that expecting women are aware of the relevant risk factors, as well as the hypothesis presuming awareness of the signs of preterm birth to occur were proved. The hypothesis presuming knowledge of the risks involved for the newborn was proved, too. This Bachelor´s Thesis can be used as an educational material for midwives who can include the topic into prenatal preparation courses and as well as inspiration to prepare educational materials for mothers-to-be.
