Neumed Breviary Pu VI E 4c from St. George's Monastery
Seifertová, Tereza ; Eben, David (advisor) ; Ciglbauer, Jan (referee)
The master thesis focuses on a neumed breviary, which presently resides in the Czech National Library under the signature VI.E.4c. The source, originally from the library of women's Benedictine monastery of St. George at the Prague Castle, dates from the middle of 12th century and is the oldest neumed manuscript from the convent. However, it is not clear where it was created and for whom. The breviary might have been intended for the convent from the beginning or got to its library later. Therefore, the main aim of this work is to find out the provenance of the codex. The first chapter deals with the physical description of the manuscript. Especially the musical-palaeographic aspects are inspected, both the original and younger (written usually in margins). The newly discovered fragment XXIV.A.65, which originally belonged to the breviary, is also investigated. With the use of these aspects, the possibilities of the source's provenance are specified. The content of the breviary is examined in the second chapter. The single sections of the manuscript are described: calendar, tonary, Commune Sanctorum and the liturgical year itself. The chapter also mentions some of the typical specifics, which appearred during the work at the musical-liturgical index of the third and fourth section of the breviary,...
Concordances of Song Part of a Convolut CZ-Ps, DA III 17 within the Sources from 15th to 17th Centuries
Hrábek, Šimon ; Baťa, Jan (advisor) ; Ciglbauer, Jan (referee)
The following thesis is basically an edition of one particular part of the Strahov convolute CZ- Pst, Ms. DA III 17 called the "song section". Majority of its repertoire are songs, yet it isn't standard monothematic section, but rather collection of various relics. The other crucial aspect of the following thesis is the table of concordances and it also contains several chapters focused on the DA III 17 manuscript itself and on three particular pieces: cantiones Pulcherrima rosa, Jesus Christus dum cernitur and trophus Alle- Domina, flos virginalis as well. Other remaining compositions are also shortly commented. The main goal of the thesis is to open up this repertoire for wider spectrum of reaserchers and musicians. And last but not least to add some new informations about this still insufficiently processed musical material.
Tradition of Post-Pentecosten Antiphons in Medieval Musical Sources. Comparison and Analysis of the Repertory
Demská, Štefánia ; Eben, David (advisor) ; Ciglbauer, Jan (referee)
This study deals with problems of identity of the office antiphons performed in the period after Pentecost. Mentioned antiphons belong to the New Testament canticle Benedictus for laudes and Magnificat for vespers. This part of the office is not so carefully regulated and between the European traditions occur variations. So this material was used for the determination of each tradition. The variability was not only in the selection and order of antiphons, but also in texts and melodies. After my analysis of the individual Post-Pentecost antiphons in several European medieval sources I found out that in certain cases with the same antiphon text appear completely different melodies or significantly different melodic variations. Due to this fact, in my opinion, is necessary to work with the musical part of this repertoire, consequently sort these chants not only according to the text, but also according to the melody. The ability to assign to the antiphons Melody ID based on the melody of chants (except Cantus ID based on the text) allows us to observe links between traditions which used this melody. In this way it is possible to reveal the relationships between the centers, which were performing the office repertoire. Keywords antiphon, office, manuscript, liturgical year, Pentecost, traditions,...
