Main conducting techniques based on Greek and Cypriot folk music
Koursaris, Kyriakos ; Pecháček, Stanislav (advisor) ; Christou, Marios (referee)
The importance of this thesis lies in the fact that it deals with the main conducting problems and how they are solved, by using Greek and Cypriot traditional music. Step by step, form the easiest and most fundamental to more complicated situations, the various conducting problems are explained through drawings and schemes, musical examples and relevant information. The main reasons for undertaking this task and subject have to do with organizing the material available and obtained through the course of the facultative study and present them in a matter most suitable to students and scholars interested not only in the art of conducting but also in the traditional music of Greece and Cyprus. By familiarizing with the existing bibliography and through extensive research, use of various software for recreating the music examples and careful design of the conducting pattems, an analytical textbook offering instructions and a meticulous anthology of relevant songs and compositions has been conceived. In this way and to whoever it may concern the thesis can become a guide to the rudiments of conducting and a pleasant, though precise manual conceming pattems and skills.
Arvo Pärt - The Choral Tintinnabuli Compositions
Christou, Marios ; Nedělka, Michal (advisor) ; Pecháček, Stanislav (referee)
This diploma work deals with Arvo Part's latest period, the so called "Tintinnabuli" style. The purpose of this diploma is to analyze six Tintinnabuli choral compositions and to discover the well "hidden" quality. To find the origin of the various components that comprised it (melody, harmony, voice leading, form) and to explain as clear as possible the way in which the composer combines them together in a fascinating way, but at the same time having his personal "voice". Consequently, this diploma work has, as its aim, to prove the importance of this new style and how it can be a great contribution in the history of music. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
The Legacy of the Composers of Holy Minimalism
Christou, Marios ; Nedělka, Michal (advisor) ; Pecháček, Stanislav (referee) ; Riedlbauch, Václav (referee)
This dissertation is a result of the author's great interest in contemporary music and especially musical "styles" known as "Holy minimalism", "New simplicity", etc. In a way, this work is an extension of my master thesis that dealt with the music of Arvo Pärt which only deepened my interest for this kind of music. Here I also deal with the music of Henryk Mikolaj Górecki whose name very often appears beside that of Arvo Pärt's and he is usually characterized as his Polish counterpart. As a student of the Pedagogical Faculty of the Charles University I realize that the music education students of this university are not familiar with the musical output of the post-modern era, a fact that means that they will not be able to teach anything about contemporary music in their role of music teachers. Undoubtedly, the music of the second half of the 20th century and 21s1 century is an integral part of the history of music and I strongly believe that it has a very high artistic value. Consequently, it is essential that pedagogues know and understand this music. This is the main reason for choosing this topic. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
The Legacy of the Composers of "Holy minimalism"
Christou, Marios
This dissertation deals with the musical legacy of the so called "Holy minimalism" and consists of analyses of specific works by Henryk Mikolaj Górecki and Arvo Pärt. The part dealing with H. M. Górecki contains analyses of selected compositions between his first opus, Four Preludes and opus 36 (3rd Symphony). The musical works have been selected and examined in order to demonstrate the development of his musical language. The part concerned with A. Pärťs music concentrates only on analyzing compositions from his late "Tintinnabuli" style to provide a complete comprehension of this very personal and "popular" style. The analyses in this thesis examine several aspects of the chosen compositions: voiceleading, form, structural functions of various aspects, texture, extra-musical elements, utilization of citations and allusions (in the case of Górecki), etc. Nevertheless, no conventional method was used (e.g. Schenkerian Analysis, Pitch-Class Sets analysis of A. Forte or Complex Analysis as suggested by J. Kulka, etc.), instead the method of analysis was determined by the "nature" of the composition under examination or the musical language of the composer. The similarities between these composers are pointed out, (e.g. monotonality, pandiatonic harmony, utilization of minimum musical material, inspiration...

Jazz as a Historical Phenomenon and its Influence Classical Music
Skarparis, George ; Kittnarová, Olga (advisor) ; Christou, Marios (referee)
In my thesis i analyze the history of jazz, since the time of the slavery, and Ii follow how the African American people from various locations and tribes were forced to go in America to work. I divide each period, starting chronologically and explaining how Afro- Americans developed the music which today is called jazz. I analyze the elements from African music that African Americans were using and i move into the era that their style was flourishing in New Orleans. I then speak about the main genres of their music until jazz appeared, and i write about the different sub-styles and forms that existed, such as spirituals, ragtime, blues and others. In the work it is also mentioned briefly how Jazz came into the Czech Republic, and i illustrate the contribution of Jaroslav Jezek. In two chapters i speak about the typical jazz elements and harmony, and i make some comparison with the classical music elements. In the final chapter i analyze three works from composers of the 20th century that were influenced by jazz, and show how their compositions used elements from the african american music.
