Infastructures of (the History of) Art
Buddeus, Hana ; Lomová, J.
The introductory chapter of the proceedings of the VIIth Congress of Art Historians, held in September 2021 in Ústí nad Labem, presents the topic of infrastructures as one of the central themes of contemporary art and asks what place they have in the discipline of art history. The focus is on the temporally and locally conditioned context, everything that surrounds the work, what materially constitutes it and what enables or directly conditions its existence, what preserves it in time and what brings attention to it.

Bartlová, A. ; Buddeus, Hana
Infrastructures are one of the central themes of contemporary art, what place do they have in the discipline of art history? Proceedings of the VIIth Congress of Art Historians, held in September 2021 in Ústí nad Labem, discusses the topic in five chapters, revealing the mechanisms of collecting, exhibiting and reproducing art, art education, and the conservation of art monuments. The focus is on the temporally and locally conditioned context, everything that surrounds the work, what materially constitutes it and what enables or directly conditions its existence, what preserves it in time and what brings attention to it.
Copies, Reproductions, Casts, Prints
Buddeus, Hana
The Covid-19 pandemic has once again drawn our attention to the importance of thinking through various aspects of remote access to originals or second-hand spectatorship within art history. Thanks to graphic prints, reduced or reproduced sculptures, various souvenirs and especially photographic reproductions printed in magazines, calendars, books, posters or hung online, art is circulating, leaving the elite environment of collections and gaining a new context. How can reproductions of various material forms, qualities and uses be considered within art history?
Action Art, Land Art and Photography as an (un)reliable witness
Šimková, Lenka ; Klimešová, Marie (advisor) ; Mlčoch, Jan (referee) ; Buddeus, Hana (referee)
Action art, as well as land art, and photography are an inseparable match. Photography is naturally conceived as one of the essential means of documentation of these artistic forms and often the only source of information about their visual appearance. Therefore, we need to ask what this means for our perception and evaluation of the individual art works, how the artists treated such documentation, who and why produced it and what were the subsequent strategies of its representation. But above all, we need to realise and assess our general expectations, presumptions and believes associated with the medium of photography and its anthropological, philosophical and sociological aspects.
Black-and-white men with palettes?
Buddeus, Hana
In an essay published in a special issue of October magazine devoted to black-and-white photography, Matthew Witkovsky asks whether photography studies can serve as a model for art history. Using specific examples from 20th century Czech art (monographs and photographic portraits of artists), I show how we have moved from a belief in the purity of the photographic record to an emphasis on how the photographic image is constructed. Photography unequivocally highlights the need to examine not just artists and their work, but also the circumstances of their creation, distribution and reception.
Bob Krčil
Douša, Jan ; MOUCHA, Josef (advisor) ; Buddeus, Hana (referee)
The life and work of Bob Krčil have so far been known from fragments and unsubstantiated legends. The aim of this essayistic piece is to lay out the deeper motives of his personal trajectory, photographic oeuvre, and activities for the Czech exile community. Krčil’s photographic body of work is inseparably connected with his eventful life. The writing of the thesis was preceded by tracking down and putting together Krčil’s fragmented estate, sorting out his correspondence and writings, and interviewing people who knew him personally. By drawing on these materials, the thesis aims to provide insight into the life and motivations of this important figure of Czech exile culture.
Life and work of a Silesian photographer and painter Józef Raszka (1875-1929)
Klepáčová, Veronika ; BÁRTA, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Buddeus, Hana (referee)
The Master thesis deals with life and work of a Silesian photographer and painter Józef Raszka (1875-1929). During the compilation of the thesis emphasis was put on searching and collecting information in archives and finally on their processing into one comprehensive unit. Generally, the thesis is divided into four main parts. The first chapter outlines historical events that took place during Raszka's life in a region he lived in. The other two chapters describe Raszka's life and the research method in detail. All of the chapters mentioned above should introduce this extraordinary and controversial personality to a reader and simultaneously get him/her acquainted with the artist's complicated character and interesting attitude toward life. In the last chapter the findings are applied in order to interpret Raszka's work. The indivisible part of the thesis consists also of a photography illustration and a catalogue that can be found at end of the thesis and which encompasses reproductions of all Raszka's photographs which are known.
Cliché in Contemporary Art Photography
Čejková, Michaela ; Buddeus, Hana (advisor) ; DVOŘÁK, Tomáš (referee)
The diploma thesis defines the therm "cliché" in art and specifically in photography. This definition stems from examining concepts that are closely related to cliché: paraphrase, kitch, copy, reproduction. The thesis also pinpoints various examples of cliché in today's photography. It follows the development of certain clichés and aims to answer the question that concerns the repetitive search and imitation of certain images, even by authors who are undoubtedly aware of their existence, as well as frequency.
