Intergroup threats on the Facebook page Tomio Okamura - SPD: the case of the Ukrainian refugee wave
Čandová, Irena ; Bořil, Vít (advisor) ; Lepič, Martin (referee)
The aim of the thesis is to identify the use of intergroup threats on the Facebook page of Tomio Okamura - SPD. The work is framed by the theory of intergroup threat. Its central concept - the intergroup threat - was investigated using the method of directed content analysis of Facebook posts. It was expected that the thesis, on the basis of an appropriate operationalisation of the theory, would highlight the main ways in which the SPD and Tomio Okamura portray Ukrainian refugees as a threat to the Czech population. During the first phase of the refugee wave from the beginning of the invasion until mid-May 2022, a total of six subcategories of realistic threats in relation to Ukrainian refugees appeared in the texts. These threats were used in 15 % of all analysed Facebook posts. Very often the threats occurred in the context of criticism of the current government. Other themes used in the context of threats included health, education, housing, social tensions, maladjustment and Roma. There was not a single positive message in relation to Ukrainian refugees. Key words: intergroup threat, Facebook, SPD, Tomio Okamura, Ukraine, refugees
Symptoms of banal nationalism in the process of ethno-political contestation in the British Isles
Bořil, Vít ; Lepič, Martin (advisor) ; Jelen, Libor (referee)
Symptoms of banal nationalism in the process of ethno-political contestation in the British Isles Abstract This thesis deals with the concept of banal nationalism (Billig 1995) and it's symptoms in Scotland and Wales. The aim of this thesis is to create theoretical and conceptual framework which is necessary for introduction to the study of banal nationalism. This is achieved by systemic review of the relevant literature. A broad spectrum of components of banal nationalism has been identified in Scotland and Wales. The review has found that banal nationalism is most commonly reproduced by the media, such as the daily press. It is also embedded in the landscape and manifests itself in the people's day-to-day lives. The thesis points out ways to identify banal nationalism in political documents, banknotes and postcards. It shows how individual manifestations vary in every region: For example, in Scotland, they tend to come from institutions much more often than in Wales. In Scotland, targeted guerrilla campaigns, which do occur in Wales, are not seen. Key words: banal nationalism, sub-state nationalism, Scotland, Wales, regional competence, devolution
Formation and delimitation of the Bosnian Serbs' ethno-national identity vis-à-vis Bosniaks in Bosnia and Herzegovina
Žemličková, Jana ; Lepič, Martin (advisor) ; Bořil, Vít (referee)
Formation and delimitation of the Bosnian Serbs' ethno-national identity vis-à- vis Bosniaks in Bosnia and Herzegovina Abstract: The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine the concept of ethno-national identity of Bosnian Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina, from the Dayton Agreement in 1995 to the present. The work seeks to synthesize and integrate the prior research works from the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is done through a method of systematic review in order to serve as a basis for subsequent research on the current issues. In addition to the basic cultural and ethnic elements defining the Bosnian Serb nation, it is found that the "ethnically cleansed" area of the Republika Srpska plays an important role in self-determination. Exclusive and inclusive elements of a nationalist nature are also examined, which within Bosnia and Herzegovina are mainly produced by institutions that thus strengthen national identity and nationalize society. They are thus central to the formation and delimitation of the ethno-nation of Bosnian Serbs in contrast to other constitutive nations, especially Bosniaks. From the studied articles, it was found that one of the essential elements of the ethno-nation is the Serbian Cyrillic and a certain symbol also represents the whole territory of the Republika Srpska. Determinants of attitudes towards immigrants in the Visegrad countries
Schlichter, Martin ; Bořil, Vít (advisor) ; Janská, Eva (referee)
The following Bachelor's thesis is concerned with the evaluation of attitudes towards migrants in countries of the Visegrád Group (V4). Its main aim is to analyse the determinants that affect such attitudes. It primarily builds on the work of the group threat theory and social indentity theory. The thesis examines the impact of socio-psychological, socio-economic and demographic attributes, and also includes influences of relevant national and regional contexts. Its findings stem from the evaluation of the 2017 European Values Study dataset using multiple linear regression. The main contribution of this work is the discovery of the importance of Polish national context, followed by interpersonal trust, education, and conservatism. Despite existing theoretical assumptions, age did not turn out to be a significant determinant impacting attitudes in the countries of V4. Institutional trust and empathy played a significant role in terms of polarization in all of the countries evaluated. The impact of other attributes examined, including regional impact, was generally low. Keywords: attitudes, immigrants, Visegrád Group, multiple linear regression, national conte 2
Political macrogeography of current public opinion on migration and refugee crisis in the European Union: multilevel analyses
Bořil, Vít ; Dostál, Petr (advisor) ; Čermáková, Dita (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on the so-called "migration crisis" and its impact on public opinion across the European Union (EU) between the years 2014 and 2017. It stems from existing literature that works with the concept of perceived group threat. The main goal is to analyze individual-level and contextual-level factors that played a key role in a certain development of native population's negative attitudes towards migrants and refugees. Such context is represented by the EU member states. An important part of the analysis deals with the relative imporance of contextual-level factors vis-à-vis individual-level determinants. Based on the results of multinomial multilevel logistic regression, the study finds that contextual-level characteristics had a substantial impact on negative attitudes towards immigrants and a large impact on negative attitudes towards refugees. Moreover, the importance of contextual determinants increased in 2015 and 2016, respectively, followed by a decline in the subsequent period. The analyses also revealed that during the "migration crisis" the impact of specific categories of explanatory variables evolved differently. Furthermore, it was shown that educational attainment, preferred social identity and different historical immigration legacies had a considerably...
