Sites and Sights. Displacement in the Era of Visual Turn
Bagdasarova, Jaroslava ; Petráň, Tomáš (advisor) ; Czumalo, Vladimír (referee)
The study deals with the experience of displacement. It treats the subject through the photographic codes of Chukchi migrants and tourists who have one way or another transcended rather notional boundaries of cultural configurations. Methodologically, the study combines visual anthropology, phenomenology of body and space, and surrealist approach to reality. Visuality is not seen as a mere tool of anthropological knowledge but a disposition for new epistemology. The study reveals the interrelation between the transformation of Chukchi from tourists to migrants while gradually integrating themselves in a culturally new milieu of Saint Petersburg, and their way of seeing. It is then also the character of their snapshots which changes: photography of remarkable is replaced by the photography of observed and later on by the photography of an observer.
Transcultural cinema: work of David MacDougall
Bagdasarova, Jaroslava ; Petráň, Tomáš (advisor) ; Kubica, Petr (referee)
The study discusses relationship between anthropology and film. It reveals coherence in their development as well as correlation in the way they treat the field of knowledge and representation. As proclaimed in the study, both areas tend to deal with a problem of subject. It creates tension in both, in the question of representation of subjective experience and in the pursuit of anthropological knowledge as a dialogue. Work of David MacDougall serves as an example of exploring possibilities of film as a medium which can cross the cultural boundaries and at the same time expand the boundaries of anthropology as science.
