Challenger and his chances in the US House of Representatives electoins
Černá, Veronika ; Dvořáková, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Andrýsová, Lenka (referee)
This diploma thesis focuses on challengers' success in the US House of Representatives elections in a selected group of states during the time period 2000-2010. It deals with the context of the American party system and describes the framework of electoral politics and campaigns. Specific position of incumbents in the elections and the incumbency advantage are taken into account as well. Aim of this work is to determine whether and how particular dominance (or absence of a dominant position) of political party in the electoral districts influences challengers' chances to be elected. Electoral districts are divided into two groups according to the presidential election results of 2000, 2004 and 2008. First, there are districts where one party has a dominant voters' support and candidates of that party are safe in the elections. Second, there are districts where neither party has a dominant position. After analysing the House election results 2000-2010 from the perspective of successfully elected challengers, the diploma thesis concludes that when the district was (according to specified criteria) safe for one party, challenger of the other party had no chance of being elected.

This thesis deals with the new foreign strategy of USA against the terrorism. The main question of the thesis is which concept the President of the USA Barack Obama is planning to apply as a framework for the foreign policy of the United States against the terrorism and towards the states which directly or indirectly support the terrorists or abide them in their territory. At first, previous traditions of the American foreign policy are mapped. Than follows the analysis of the concept of "containment" according to definition from the book "Containment" by Ian Shapiro. The third part analyzes contemporary foreign policy of the President of the USA Barack Obama and compares it with constituents of the concept by Ian Shapiro. The objective of this thesis is to find out whether the President uses the concept of "containment" in his policy against the terrorism.

EU-USA: Partnership or Conflict
Šedivá, Linda ; Dvořáková, Vladimíra (advisor) ; Andrýsová, Lenka (referee)
The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the relationship between the EU and the USA with an emphasis on the period after the year 2000. The analysis was only possible with knowledge of preceding milestones that have formed the partnership, the thesis- therefore- begins with the period after the Second World War, to which the European Union can trace its roots. The thesis follows the changes in the relationship during the decades of the Cold War (long-term trends) and in the first decade after its end (short-term trends), and then, due to the broadness of the issue, concrete themes from the period after the year 2000. The thesis also examines the relationship in terms of partnership and conflict, and examines the reasons and events behind the motivation on both sides. The first chapter deals with the Europe-USA relationship development since 1945 and is divided into five parts according to post-war decades. The second chapter deals with the Europe (EU)-USA relationship development after the Cold War up to the beginning of the new millennium. The third chapter represents the centerpiece of the thesis- key issues in the transformation of the relationship. The chapter is divided into four subchapters: divergent and shared opinions on the fight against terrorism (Afghanistan, Iraq), divergent and shared opinions in relation to international organisations and treaties (the Kyoto Protocol, the International Criminal Court), divergent and shared opinions on solving the financial crisis. The fourth subchapter examines the transformation and continuity of the relationship after the accession of the Obama administration.
Prezidentské primární volby ve Spojených státech amerických v roce 2008
Andrýsová, Lenka ; Dvořáková, Vladimíra (advisor)
Presidential primary elections could demonstrate current developments in the American society and contribute to better understanding of general elections in November 2008. Therefore, after theoretical introduction about primary elections as process, I describe and compare standpoints of front-runners to the most debated issues (Hillary Rodham Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama, then partially John Edwards, Rudolph Guiliani, Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney). As a result, new trends in American political parties could be identified. Moreover, this analysis could forecast main tensions during the general presidential election in November. Apart from issues, this thesis deals with race and gender question and ageism and effects and success of using new communication channels in candidates' political campaigns.
