A Chapter of the Historiography of Art History and Heritage Preservation. František X. Beneš (1820 - 1888).
Horáček, Jaroslav ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Biegel, Richard (referee)
The origins of heritage conservation in Czech lands are usually dated back to the year 1850 when the Central Commission for Research and Conservation of Architectural Heritage (Central-Commission für Erforschung und Erhaltung der Baudenkmalen) was founded in Vienna. In the years 1854-1855, fourteen conservators were assigned to the Bohemian area whose job was to search for and describe heritage sites and they also were to initiate their repairs. One of those fourteen conservators was one - still rather unbeknown - František X. Josef Beneš (1816-1888), conservator of Čáslav county, with whose life and work this paper is concerned. He was born into a family of an establishment bureaucrat Josef Alois Beneš in Český Dub, however, soon the family moved to Osek u Rokycan. Having graduated from grammar-school he continued studying at Prague Polytechnic school where he focused on chemistry and sugar industry. He started as a sugar industry adjunct in Dobrovice and later he was moved to Suchdol u Kutné Hory to act as a manager of a local sugar factory. Having helped František Alexander Heber with his work Böhmens Burgen, Vesten und Bergschlösser to whom he gave valuable data about many a building in Kutná Hora area, Beneš himself began to be interested in conservation. In the 1840'swe can already find Beneš...
The Iconographic Program of coffered ceiling in Golden hall at the state castle Telč
Brychtová, Šárka ; Zlatohlávek, Martin (advisor) ; Konečný, Lubomír (referee)
5 Abstract The work provides a factual description, thematic description and semantic analysis of the coffered ceiling in the Golden Hall at the State Telč Castle in Telč, including the historical context of its making. The ceiling consists of thirty coffers, each depicting one figure. The original graphic templates have been found for fourteen coffers. The depicted figures were identified in additional nine coffers based on the analysis of the represented attributes of those figures, but the meaning of the remaining seven coffers remains to be unclear. Based on identifying the figures in the majority of the coffers, the work builds two main, partially overlapping thematic courses. The first thematic course focuses on love between human beings and love as a part of Christian faith. The second thematic course focuses on moralistic themes, warning against moral lapses and particularly against the improper use of wealth. One chapter in the work focuses on probable authorship of the coffered ceiling and on foreign influences, but a definitive satisfying answer to these questions has not been found. Keywords coffered ceiling, iconographic program, graphic patterns, Golden hall, castle, Telč
Meanings of Myth. Themes of classical mythology in Czech fine arts of the 1930s
Kocichová, Ivana ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Bažant, Jan (referee) ; Prahl, Roman (referee)
Classical mythology has been one of the main sources of inspiration for European artists for centuries. It also remained current during the 20th century. From the 1920s, one can see increasing interest in classical myths; it becomes a source of inspiration even for artists of avant-garde art movements. The 20th century artist approach themes from classical mythology from a position of newly acquired artistic freedom. Release of iconographic conventions and academic rules, emphasis on psychology and individuality of a modern man brings specific forms of reception and reinterpretation of classical myths. In many cases, classical mythology carries allegorical meanings in a relation to contemporary political and social events, often in a very critical tone. But it also represents a tool for one's personal coping with reality. The thirties and early forties of the 20th century with dark atmosphere affected by war conflicts represent the culmination period of classical myths in visual arts. The tendency can be observed both in the art of European and Czech origin. Antiquity and classical mythology become the symbols of a return to the roots of European culture and civilization, symbols of the common European humanistic heritage. The collection of nearly 180 works of modern Czech art inspired by classical...
Iconography of Rudolf II.
Zlatohlávková, Eliška ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Fučíková, Eliška (referee) ; Seifertová, Hana (referee)
Many portraits of Rudolf II were painted and created during his lifetime, forming a significant component of Rudolfine art, however, they have not received a sufficient art historical attention. They document, at times at stylyzed manner, the transformation of Rudolf's appearance. However, their most important task was to demonstrate and make tangeable Rudolf's authentic appearance to the world and to celebrate his magnanimity and personality. Thus, there are many portraits that represent Rudolf as a good emperor or a brilliant commander, although, as we know, they did not correspond to reality. A special chapter of the portrait iconography also create complicated allegories about Rudolf's reign relying on representations of personifications, mythological and animal symbols using Rudolf's personal impresa. Most of the portraits follow former portrait types typical for the 16th century, as bust, standing figure or equestrian monument. However, the peculiarity for Rudolfine portraiture is the allegorical portrait Rudolf as Vertumnus painted by Giuseppe Arcimboldo that combines classical portrait with allegory.

Shoes in van Gogh's oeuvre New interpretationes from Derrida to present day
Zachariáš, Jan ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Prahl, Roman (referee)
Resumé Presented thesis is dedicated to specific problems of van Gogh's art. In the first chapters I investigate Heidegger's philosophy of art and his philosophical interpretation of van Gogh's painting Old shoes. Second chapter is dedicated to the critical reaction of distinguished art-historian Meyer Schapiro. Schapiro wrote two short texts, where he attacked Heidegger's way of interpretation of the painting. But Schapiro did not take into account Heidegger's philosophical arguments and completely misunderstood Heidegger's essay. Third chapter is dedicated to the "conclusion" of the conflict of interpretations. In late seventies French philosopher Jacques Derrida published an article (Restitutions), which deals with previous contributions. Derrida seriously attempted to investigate philosophical principals of Heidegger and Schapiro and he suggested, that both authors have the same tendency to appropriate the shoes to some person, in Heidegger's case to peasant woman in that of Schapiro to van Gogh. Derrida tried to leave the "theory of appropriation" by saying that the shoes belong to the painting. I also added two appendices dedicated to specific problems of van Gogh's painting. In first appendix I investigated the role of synthesis of painting and drawing in van Gogh. In second appendix I trace the...
Illustrations in the print Pán rady (1505).
Polanská, Magda ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Voit, Petr (referee)
Diploma thesis with the topic Illustration cycle in print called Pán rady (1505) deals with issue of illustration in old printed books, but also in wider perspective with text, its history and its mediation via manuscripts and print. Art-historical background of the author is combined with informations from other disciplines like library science, history of literature and history. As woodcuts are known as an import from Strassbourg, formal analysis is focused on finding paralels in local illustrated books production. Surprisingly one of the models used for woodcuts is copperplate by Dutch engraver known as Master FVB. There are several specifics when iconography of woodcuts is concerned. In the first place are all the allegorical figures depicted as male - despite the fact that in most other artworks is Fortune and other figures traditionally shown as female. Other interesting aspect is lack of female element on the illustrations at all, with one exception where depicted woman is most likely prostitute. This can be explained as an awareness of the strict morals utraquistic townsmen in Prague. There are quite a few parallels with contemporary tendencies in this sort of moralising literature and its influence on art. Illustrations from Pán rady are preceding popular protestant imaginary warning from...
Self-portait in sculpture in Bohemia
Havelková, Tereza ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Prahl, Roman (referee)
There is only limited amount of sculptural self-portraits. Only few sculptors captured their own appearence and they did it only exceptionally twice in their lives. The first known self-portrait is Petr Parléř's bust in St. Vitus Cathedral's triforium. It is a historically unique example and it remained isolated in the Czech area for a long time. During the Baroque, there began a long line of self-portrait effigies within larger iconographic units, so called cryptoportraits. Three- dimensional effigies, as reliefs, occur with the same frequency. The major turning point for the creation of scuptural self-portraits was made by J. V. Myslbek with his effigy from 1902. He prescribed in its entirety the type of respectable person, the type of representative bust. Since then, there can be found the increasing use of sculptural self-portraits appear, the continuous chronological sequence and its development can be traced in the work of his pupils. The sculptors usually portrait themselves as serious persons; they try to capture all their current experience with representative effigies. Even the expressional part of these effigies represent faithful reflection of reality with accurate depiction of human physiognomy and character. Their work with space is consistent but only minimal with extra-portrait...
Iconography of tarot cards, named Tarot of Mantegna
Skopalová, Eva ; Konečný, Lubomír (advisor) ; Purš, Ivo (referee)
The Iconography of Tarot Cards Known as the Mantegna Tarot Eva Skopalová Abstract: The text deals with a general idea of The So-Called Tarocchi of Mantegna. Individual sheets of the whole game are grouped by decades with letters E, D, C, B, A, and the total number of sheets is fifty. Each level of the system corresponds to a level of the universe in a way it was comprehended by a Renaissance man in the late 15th century in Northern Italy. The text brings out the idea of each level and the general idea of the whole system as well. I am connecting the system with thoughts of Raymond Lulle, which was an important element in thoughts of Nicolas of Cusa, who is considered to be a major creator of the idea of the ensemble. Subsequently, the reference of cards is dealt as the second life of the ensemble, firstly in the context of thoughts of Marsilio Ficino, but also as an idea of educative games of the 18th and 19th centuries.
