Comparison of solar and geomagnetic effects on the atmospheric circulation variability modes
Huth, Radan ; Pokorná, Lucie ; Bochníček, Josef ; Hejda, Pavel
The shapes, spatial extent, and intensity of modes of low-frequency variability of atmospheric circulation in the Northern Hemisphere in winter are significantly affected by the phase of the 11-yr solar cycle. Here we extend the analysis to the geomagnetic activity, and compare the results with the solar activity.
Solar/geomagnetic aktivity, temperature of the winter polar lower stratosphere, the QBO phase and the stratospheric polar vortex
Bochníček, Josef ; Hejda, Pavel ; Huth, Radan ; Davídkovová, Hana
Labitzke (1987) has found a strong correlation between lower stratosphere temperature and solar cycle for data divided according to the QBO phase. This correlation explained why low solar activity combined with QBO-east phase or high solar activity and QBO-west phase was often followed by stratospheric warming and disturbed polar vortex. On th other hand, Arnold and Robinson (2001) have shown that high geomagnetic activity gives rise to cooling of lower stratosphere and leads to the strenghtening of polar vortex.
The influence of the 11-year solar cycle on the Arctic Oscillation
Huth, Radan ; Bochníček, Josef ; Hejda, Pavel
We study the influence of the solar activity on the Arctic Oscillation, in particular on its intensity and Pacific centre.
Changes in atmospheric circulation in Central Europe and their influence on climate in the Czech Republic
Cahynová, Monika ; Huth, Radan
This work is concerned with the influence of changes of atmospheric circulation (represented by the Hess-Brezowsky and Brádka’s subjective catalogues of synoptic types) on observed linear trends of 11 climatic elements from 21 stations in the Czech Republic in the period 1961-1998. The ratio of "hypothetical" (caused only by changes in the frequency of synoptic types) and observed trends shows that changes in atmospheric circulation are the primary cause of massive winter warming, and autumn cooling connected with increasing precipitation and humidity. In spring and summer, the influence is insignificant except for precipitation, relative humidity and cloudiness changes that are related to trends in the Hess-Brezowsky catalogue, mostly in spring.
Solar and geomagnetic activity effects on the troposphere behaviour in winter 1981/1982
Bochníček, Josef ; Hejda, Pavel ; Huth, Radan
Tha association between the changes in solar/geomagnetic activity and changes in the lower atmosphere pressure, temperature and wind fields was analyzed for the Northern Hemisphere winter of 1981/1982.
Effect of solar activity on the modes of variability of atmospheric circulation
Huth, Radan ; Pokorná, Lucie ; Bochníček, Josef ; Hejda, Pavel
Solar activity effect on relative intensity and the range of variability modes has been proved.
North Atlantic Oscillation - definitions, manifestations, influence on European climate
Huth, Radan
The paper reviews basic knowledge on the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), including its manifestations in the atmospheric pressure and geopotential height fields, definitions, methods of detection, effects on surface climate elements (temperature, precipitation) mainly in Europe, connections to phenological phases of some plant species, and relationships with solar activity.
Atmospheric circulation types connected with flood events
Huth, Radan ; Buchtele, Josef
The relationship is examined between the occurrence of flood events and atmospheric circulation types to occur at the day of culmination and the preceding days. The analysis is carried out for 11 Czech basins differing in their area, position and orientation relative to the atmospheric flow.
The heat-stress-related mortality in the Czech Republic: first results
Kyselý, Jan ; Huth, Radan ; Kříž, B.
The analysis of the HSR mortality in the Czech Republic tries to find answers to the following questions: (i) which treshold value of tempereture (or of another temperature- and humidity- related variable)must be exceeded to observe the HSR mortality, in dependence on time of the year; (ii) which meteorological variable (or an index) accounts for the largest portion of the mortality increase, and what is the best model between meteorological variables and mortality; (iii) what is the dependence of the HSR mortality on the age group and sex; and (iv) whether a synoptic approach based on an objective classification of air masses leads to better results compared to the more traditional methods. The analysis covers the 1990s when some extremely hot summers appeared in the Czech Republic.
