"Cytogenetics and biology of selected representatives of the family Sphaeriidae" Mgr. ing. Tereza Kořínková Abstract of a PhD. thesis The thesis has a form of four separate articles, the full texts of which are included. Two of them were published, one was accepted and one was under revision before submission of the PhD thesis. The articles deal with cytogenetics, breeding and nutrition of selected representatives of the hermaphroditic, viviparous, primarily freshwater bivalves of the family Sphaeriidae (Mollusca: Bivalvia: Veneroida). Although various aspects of the biology of Sphaeriidae have been intensely studied for more than 100 years, many questions still remained unresolved. This thesis brings data on chromosome numbers of 11 species(10 of which have not been studied cytogenetically before) and information on the course of meiosis in two of these species (Chapter 1). Although the chromosome numbers are high (from ca. 140 to more than 240), the behaviour of chromosomes at meiosis rather corresponds to that of diploid organisms. Also the DNA contents in five selected species with high chromosome numbers (as measured by flow- cytometry) do not differ significantly from those in sphaeriids with a diploid chromosome number of 30. On the Nothernmost and Southernmost Limits of European Land Snail Spatial Ranges

The aim of this work was to evaluate the limits of ranges of European land snail species along the north-south gradient. To work out the document it was necessary to prepare the set of digitalized maps, that enabled to create the database of ranges of the individual land snails species. Based on obtained data I tried to identify places where the northern and southern borders of species ranges are the most frequent. The landsnails' ranges are affected not only by particular life requirements of the individual species (potential limits), but also by other conditions, especially climatic, geographical and historical (truncated limits). In this work I focused on their differentiation. Above mentioned process also enabled me to track the north- south changes in species richness of the landsnails taking into consideration the truncated and potential limits. The most important natural barriers constraining that numerous of species cannot naturally widespread from the south to the north are the Scandinavian Mountains, the Alpes and the Carpathians and suprisingly also southern borders of german and polish lowlands. Taxonomic revision of the genera Anisus in the Czech Republic (Mollusca: Planorbidae)

The aim of this work is to critically review the anatomical and morphological characters being currently used in the determination of Central European species of the genus Anisus and to confront them with molecular characters. For the molecular analysis mitochondrial genes for 16S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase - subunit I (COI) were used. DNA analysis showed that known species occuring in the Czech Republic form well distinguishable genetic lines. Subsequent revisions of the anatomical characters of these lines have proven that these characters are due to their variability not suitable for determination, especially for the differentiating of the species A. spirorbis and A. leucostoma. The conchological characters have proven more suitable, especially the ratio of the size of the last and penultimate whorl. With the help of this character, we can safely determine a population within which there are transitional forms in other morphological and anatomical characters.
Land snail shell degradation in forest environment

Experimental shell degradation of nine common Central European pulmonate snail species in forest ecosystems in the Czech Republic was investigated. Model shells were deposited for 6, 12, 24 and 36 months in leaf litter of six different places; than removed, dried and photographed. Set of alternations was analysed by CANOCO 4.5 statistical system. Small species degrade different from large ones. Large species corrode outwards, after periostracum disruption the ostracum dissolves and holes appear. Small species corrode out from within, calcium carbonate dissolves and small windows arise. The shell degradation proceeds with different rate on various localities. Some localities have characteristic types of alteration, e.g. peat bog pine forest exhibits ostracum dissolution and periostracum deformation. The ultimate influence of the degradation is caused by pH value and humidity. Shell shape and size have effect on its degradation. Moreover, other important decomposition agents are living animals.
