Roman military river boats in the 1st - 4th century A.D.

The aim of this thesis is to make a comprehensive interpretation of Roman military river boats from the 1st - 4th century A.D. which will be mainly oriented on the direct archaeological findings of these ships. To better understand the function and the use of the boats, the first chapter will present various military units that commanded their own flotillas, whereby commentary will be predominantly focused on the river fleets. The core of this thesis will be devoted to the issue of military river boats. In the introduction of the second part of this work, we will firstly present historical sources which will help us with the study of these boats. Based on the detailed analysis of these valuable artefacts we will show the partial typological development of the boats as well as the development of Roman shipbuilding methods and techniques. In the last chapter, the interpretation of the Roman military river boats will be supplemented with the ships known only from the written and iconographical sources as well as with sea ships which could have been operated on the rivers too. The aim of the last part will be to compare sea boats with river boats and fleets stressing the importance of those operated on rivers. Roman military presence in the Western Desert of Egypt

This research paper focuses on complex reconstruction of environmental conditions in the Western Desert of Egypt during the Roman times. Archaeological and historical documents provide very important information about Roman occupation development in the Egyptian oases (Siwa, Bahariya, Farafra, Dakhla, Kharga) and exploitation of the desert. The work is aimed at evidence of Roman military presence in the study area on the basis of current results of archaeological surveys. Observations of Roman methods to adapt in hyperarid landscape contribute to analyse general questions concerning human response to climate changes in northern Africa. Plants on the Minoan and Mycenaean Frescoes and Their Reflections in the 20thCentury Czech Art

The introductory chapter of my thesis is devoted to the technology of wall paintings. In order to understand the meaning and significance of plants in Minoan and Mycenaean cultures, the next chapter surveys Minoan and Mycenaean religion, which was closely connected with the domain of symbolic meaning of plants, trees and gardens. The third chapter deals with representations of plants in Minoan and Mycenaean art. Its first part gives the botanic description of plants, whose representation in visual art is expected, as to get a safe background to recognize the individual representations of plants on frescoes. Then there follow the catalogue of frescoes with floral subjects and a list of plants represented on particular frescoes. The following part summarizes the evidence of floral motifs on pottery, gems, jewellery and other Minoan and Mycenaean small objects. The last chapter brings several examples of artists using Minoan models as their inspiration in the Czech art from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Romanisation of Britain

This work is dealing with romanisation of Britain. In the first part, the situation before Roman conquest of Britain is outlined. Further, I've tried to depict the process of invasion with accent on the policy of Romans toward the tribes. The second part of the work is dealing with the romanisation itself. We can observe this process for example on creation and development of towns, material culture, and transformation of religion. In the conclusion, I've tried to assess this factors and their part in this process.
Doors as an image of sacral space

The goal of this bachelor thesis is to show specific exampes of images with false doors in the Etruskan art and to show their development through time within incorporated iconographic displays. Conclusions I made are from books dealing with topic of Etruscan religion and images of false doors in Etruscan art, as well as from my own interpretations based on specific artistic monuments. I focused on images on wall paintings, sarcophagi and on urns. I tried mainly to explain the using of false doors in Etruscan art to express the passage to World of Dead. Important aspect on the end of this work is compare Etruscan false doors with false doors in Egypt, which influenced the Etruskans for sure. Photographic documentation in archaeology

The bachelor thesis deals with description of methods used in photographic documentation in archaeology. The goal of the thesis is to describe photographic documentation in every type of its usage. There is also a description of equipment, types of lighting and taking photos in each type. The purpose of thesis is to be helpful during taking photos in archaeology. It also mentions problems which can appear during this documentation and suggests suitable solution.
The Megalithic Architecture of the Balearic Islands

Talayotic architecture arose on The Balearic Islands at the end of second millennium as a syntesis of local megalithic culture of Bronze Age and cultural influence from central Mediterraen Sea, mainly from Sardinia and Corsica. The core of talayotic buildings was a naveta and megalithic tombs, whose using was abandoned just at the beginning of Iron Age. The talayotic architecture developed on particular way in the manner of the insular cultures of occidental Mediterranean Sea until the Phoenicians arrived; at the same time the construction of talayots declined. On the other hand the sanctuaries and taulas became common. Approximately in the 6th century in post-talayotic period megalithic culture disappeared definitely. The last talayotic site was destroyed during Roman colonization.

Technology and production of Roman provincial brooches from Noricum and Pannonia

This bachelors thesis is concerned with the technology of non-ferrous metal processing and their alloys in Roman era. Describes centres of mining in the area of Roman provinces Noricum and Pannonia as well as production of brooches in these provinces. Main goals are to review and appreciate technology and partly typology of a Roman provincial set of brooches from collection of Institute of Classical Archaeology of Charles University in Prague utilizing non-destructive analytical methods and to create a reference file based on results of the analysis and assessment of effectiveness of methods used with regard to possible future research. Elemental composition of given brooches was established using energy- dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), electron microscopy (SEM) and radiography (RTG). Results as well as interpretation are presented as catalogue. Key words: Roman archaeology, brooches, roman technology, metallurgy
