Je česká myslivost institucionalizovanou formou trvale udržitelného pytláctví?
Ambrožová, Zuzana ; Bartoň, Petr (advisor) ; Hudík, Marek (referee)
This paper aims at unveiling the true nature of the Czech hunting Act by modeling the competition for property rights characteristics among gamekeepers, the subsidized group, and other users of land based resources, the taxed group. We show that the subsidized gamekeepers' group seeking to decrease public opposition tries to obfuscate the true goal of its profit-oriented efforts by supporting relatively less revealing technically imperfect institutions. It does so by advertising artificially created qualities such as tradition and public interest. What hunters try to achieve technically is to shift the reference points of desire of the other users of land-based resources in order to disable them from perceiving total policy costs. As a result taxpayers' intrinsic advantage is undermined, and contrary to the efficient redistribution hypothesis a Pareto-inferior outcome is reached. Moreover taking full account of all costs of rent-seeking, including incomplete externality internalization, institutional rigidity and created moral hazard, total social costs, connected with the outcome of competition for property rights, are not minimized. Regarding empirical testing of the theoretical propositions, analyzing hunting statistics we prove that whereas the acknowledged public goals are not met, the technically imperfect Act 449/2001 Coll. creates moral hazard in favor of gamekeepers' private interests.
Gender Studies na VŠE (aneb Ženy v ekonomii vs. typ osobnosti)
Naglová, Vendula ; Bartoň, Petr (advisor) ; Hudík, Marek (referee)
The main aim of this thesis was answering the question, if lack of women in the economics is caused by discrimination or if personality type affects successful passing of advance economic courses. Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI) was used for purposes of this thesis as the most convenient personality type indicator. This thesis tested several hypotheses resulting from expected correlation between personality type, gender (both for students and teachers) and final results. Paper showed correlation between gender and final result and also between some personality types and grade. Paper also disclosed interesting correlations between final grade and other variables unique for testing system at the University of Economics, Prague.
Attendance of Ice-hockey Matches in Czech Extraliga
Lahvička, Jiří ; Bolcha, Peter (advisor) ; Bartoň, Petr (referee)
This paper uses data about 3,640 matches played in the seasons 2000/01-2009/10 to explain individual match attendance of the top Czech ice hockey competition -- the Extraliga. Some interesting results are that fans decide whether to attend based on the detailed information about the home team, but use just the easily observable information about the away team; that a match having no impact on the final season outcome is much less attended; that televising a match decreases attendances of all matches played on the same day, but there is no negative next-day effect; that both very good and very bad weather decreases attendance; and that if two home matches are played in a short time period, their attendance is lower with likely higher impact on the second match. Substitution of ice hockey with soccer is investigated on several different levels -- while ice hockey and soccer are definitely long-term substitutes, there are mixed results for same-day substitution. Modernization of ice hockey arenas is identified as the key factor behind the almost 20% attendance growth in the analyzed period. This paper also presents a new realistic method of modeling seasonal uncertainty based on Monte Carlo simulation that does not rely on ex post information.
Do czech dealers of marihuana live at theirs moms?
Hvězda, Mikuláš ; Šťastný, Daniel (advisor) ; Bartoň, Petr (referee)
This thesis is focusing on risk premium of retail dealer of marihuana. My work is based on a questionnaire research between retail dealers. Firstly I specify a hourly wage of a dealer, which is 250 CZK/h. Afterwards I compare resulting wage with a wage in the legitimate sector and the difference between the dealer`s wage and the legitimate wage is the risk premium caused by trading on black market. The results show that the risk premium makes 52 % of the dealer`s wage. Another issue I`m focusing on are causes of risk premium and their quantification. Finally I am explaining the fall of retail prices between 2007 and 2008 when the prices fell from 250 to 200 CZK/g.
Do More Able Individuals Have Fewer Children?
Pokorná, Táňa ; Rieger, Pavel (advisor) ; Bartoň, Petr (referee)
The aim of this empirical analysis is to verify the hypothesis that more able individuals have fewer children. By abilities for the purposes of this study we meant the level of achieved education and wage. This study is inspired by the paper of M. Beenstock. Its theoretical framework is based primarily on the works of G. Becker. It is based on the assumption there is an inverse relationship between quantity and quality of children; quality means expenditures per child. For testing we use the so-called ordinary least squares method and the real data for the United States in 1992. We test the robustness of model which can be based on equations of different types and complexity. The paper also includes sub-hypothesis about influence of woman's education on number of her children. Results of the analysis confirm that education and the wage of individuals influence negatively the number of their children.
Do the Major League Baseball teams maximize performance or profits?
Šindelář, Jakub ; Bartoň, Petr (advisor) ; Koubek, Ivo (referee)
On the basis of model from paper Barrio and Szymanski (2009) I estimate if the teams are closer to their profit or performance maximizing positions. I found teams in MLB are in short run on average closer to their win maximizing position. Another interesting conclusion is there are almost no differences between clubs in open league system represented by Spanish and English football league and closed league system represented by Major League Baseball in profit maximizing choices. That means the closed league system which is usually used in North America does not help teams to maximize their profits. I examined club characteristics that might explain variations in teams maximizing choices and found that clubs, which are incorporated companies, are on average closer to their profit maximizing choices.
The Economics of Prostitution: The Market for Sexual Services in the Czech Republic
Houžvičková, Nela ; Hudík, Marek (advisor) ; Bartoň, Petr (referee)
The aim of this work is to find out why the structure of the market for sexual services changed in the years 1999 -- 2009 : why did the number of erotic clubs and the sex workers in clubs and on streets decrease and why did the number of sex workers in apartments increase? The change in nationality of composition of consumers and the development of internet are main factors of the changes. A high correlation proved to be between the number of sex workers and the number of tourists. Because of economic convergence tourists can buy less sexual services than in past whereas Czech can buy more. Other question is why earnings of sex workers are higher in comparison with wages of the women with the comparable education. The main factor is a social stigmatization.
Effectiveness of public health system and impact of introduction of regulatory payments
Pleva, Michal ; Ševčík, Miroslav (advisor) ; Bartoň, Petr (referee)
This diploma thesis aims to describe Czech health care system participants` motivations and impact and meaningfulness of setting up regulatory payments on supply of health care. It also attempts to suggest other meanings to rising effectiveness of whole system. This work is based on theoretical concepts of various health care systems and endeavours to expose their positive and also negative features. The theory of health care markets comes out from works of Stiglitz (1997) and Arrow (1963). They focused rather on US, but this thesis aims to use this knowledge also in conditions of Czech Republic. Thesis sum up expenditures on health care during the time in Czech Republic, compare with expenditures abroad and estimate their trend in future. The central point of this paper is the analysis of the introduction of regulatory payments and its influence on concrete types of health services and on the consumption of drugs. It includes also a short survey.
Vliv korupce a demokracie na ekonomický růst
Rais, Jonáš ; Svoboda, Miroslav (advisor) ; Bartoň, Petr (referee)
This paper analyses the effects of corruption and democracy on economic growth. Corruption is found to have significant negative effect on growth. Substantial part of the corruptions' effect is caused through corruption's transmission channels. More precisely, corruption is found to negatively affect investments, schooling, trade openness and positively affect inflation and political instability. Those effects are somewhat dampened by corruption's negative impact on government spending. Furthermore, while democracy is found to have no direct impact on growth, corruption is found to be more detrimental to growth in countries with autocratic regimes rather than in democracies. Democracy thus has mitigative effect on corruption.
How many people is killed by the Czech Government policy annually?
Kratochvílová, Lucie ; Bartoň, Petr (advisor) ; Špecián, Petr (referee)
This thesis analyzes the impact of changes in gas prices on road fatal accidents in the Czech Republic between 1999 - 2009. The use of heavier cars is connected with higher gas consumption that we can expect from the increasing fuel prices that will lead to a substitution of heavier cars by smaller cars. This substitution offers lower level of safety to its user. The first part of the analyze is focused on the link between changes in the size structure of cars in the Czech Republic and the fatalities. Regression analyze shows a significant link between this variables and it leads to a fact that number of people killed in an accident decreases by increase of heavier and decrease of lighter cars. The second part of the analyze is focused on the price of gas - are sales influenced by the price or not? The analyze does not prove this influence is statistically significant. The period observed is not a proof that the government is influencing the fatalities by fuel taxes.
