Iterative solution of singular systems with applications
Blaheta, Radim ; Jakl, Ondřej ; Starý, Jiří ; Turan, E.
This contribution concerns the iterative solution of singular systems which arise in many applications. Let us mention the following: - solution of PDE problems with pure Neumann boundary conditions (which is our main aim), see [7], [8], [20]. Such problems have a specific role in numerical upscaling, see [6], - solution of Neumann type subproblems in domain decomposition techniques as FETI, Neumann-Neumann, BDDC methods, see [22], [16], - analysis of Markov chain problems, computation of stochastic vector, see e.g. [18], [19], - computer tomography [15], [14] and inverse problems [4], [21].

High performance computing in micromechanics
Blaheta, Radim ; Hrtus, Rostislav ; Jakl, Ondřej ; Starý, Jiří
By micromechanics we understand analysis of the macroscale response of materials through investigation of processes in their microstructure. Here by the macroscale, we mean the scale of applications, where we solve engineering problems involving materials like different metals and composites in aircraft design or rocks and concrete in a dam construction. Different applications are characterized by different characteristic size. At macroscale the materials mostly look as homogeneous or they are idealized as homogeneous or piecewise homogeneous. A substantial heterogeneity is hidden and appears only after more detailed zooming view into the material.

Analysis of entrepreneuriship in the USA from Czech citizen’s perspective
Valenta, Ondřej ; Hartman, Ladislav (advisor) ; Starý, Jiří (referee)
This thesis explores options how Czech citizens could penetrate American market in Delaware. It finds solutions how to become an entrepreneur in Delaware, if possible. The thesis analyses the best suitable visa, business structure and owner's responsibilities that need to be fulfilled in order to be successful. Substantial part is dedicated to running a business from a distance, in this matter American company that is managed from the Czech Republic.
SNA ´09 - Seminář numerické analýzy
Blaheta, Radim ; Starý, Jiří
Seminar on Numerical Analysis 2009 (SNA’09) is the sixth meeting of a series of events started in Ostrava 2003 and devoted to numerical methods necessary for mathematical modelling of problems in sciences and engineering. In this respect, it was natural that in period 2005 - 2008 the SNA conferences became a part of the project MSTEP (http://www2.cs.cas.cz/mweb/) Modelling and simulation of complex engineering problems: effective numerical algorithms and parallel implementation using new information technologies within the program Information society administrated by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. We hope that the tradition of SNA conferences will be preserved even after finishing the MSTEP project in 2008.
Our Blue Gene Experience
Jakl, Ondřej ; Starý, Jiří
The paper describes our precious short-time opportunity to make some hands-on experience with the Bulgarian IBM Blue Gene/P system, where we tested the parallel scalability of our domain decomposition finite element solver on a greater number of processors and completed experiments with microstructure modelling of geocomposite materials. The tests showed that due to its relatively low computation/communication performance ratio this specific architecture may need optimizations of parallel codes to take advantage of its performance potential.
O adaptivních časových krocích pro počítačovou simulaci přesunů tepla a hmoty při vakuovém vymrazování
Georgiev, K. ; Kosturski, N. ; Margenov, S. ; Starý, Jiří
The work is motivated by the problem of freeze-drying, which is a process of dehydrating frozen materials by sublimation under high vacuum. Especially, it concerns the mathematical modelling and computer simulation of the heat and mass transfer with the core in solving the time-dependent nonlinear partial differential equation of parabolic type. Instead of an uniform discretization of the considered time interval, an adaptive time stepping procedure is applied in an effort to optimize the whole simulation. The procedure is based on the local comparison of the Crank-Nicholson and backward Euler time steps. The results of numerical experiments performed on a selected real-life problem are included.
Modelování THM procesů v horninách
Blaheta, Radim ; Kohut, Roman ; Neytcheva, M. ; Starý, Jiří
This paper is devoted to medelling thermal (T), hydraulic (H) and mechanical (M) processes in rocks. These physical processes seem to be most important ones for many engineering applications ranging from the classical mining, tunelling and underground constructions to new geotechnologies of waste disposal or geothermal anergy utilization.
Paralelní výpočty modelových problémů termo-elastic kých procesů: srovnání programových kódů založených na MPI a OpenMP
Kohut, Roman ; Starý, Jiří ; Kolcun, Alexej
The paper concerns the mathematical modelling of thermo-mechanical processes in nuclear waste repositories and deals especially with the computations of thermo-elastic responses of rocks in the vicinity of geological deposition of the spent nuclear fuel.
Paralelní výpočty nestacionární rovnice vedení tepla
Kohut, Roman ; Blaheta, Radim ; Starý, Jiří
In the paper, the solution of the nonstationary heat equations is described. The parallel computing with the adaptive timestep size is used. For the solution of the linear systems the preconditioned CG method is used with the preconditioning given by the additive overlapping Schwarz method.
Paralelní počítání termoelastického modelu KBS
Starý, Jiří ; Kohut, Roman
The paper describes numerical experiments with a finite element solution of the thermo-elasticity model KBS. Especially, it is devoted to the parallel computing of nonstacionary heat conduction problem, when the linear systems arising in each time step are solved by the overlapping domain decomposition method.
