Points of Perception: Possible Readings of Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go
Vinduška, Josef ; Ženíšek, Jakub (referee) ; Chalupský, Petr (advisor)
The thesis presents four perceptions of Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go (2006) using (and synthesizing) the critical approaches of New Criticism, Reader-Response Criticism, Psychoanalytic Criticism, Structuralism and Deconstruction. The novel is read respectively as a (dis)continuation of the author's previous themes, a science-fictional dystopia, a comedy, and a metaphor for human condition. The main aim is to discuss aspects of each reading and to determine whether the meaning of the novel changes with different perceptions, or whether the meaning is independent of the critic's methods and perspectives.
Gendr stereotypes in english language course books for grammar and secondary schools
Svobodová, Pavla ; Higgins, Bernadette (referee) ; Chalupský, Petr (advisor)
This thesis focuses on the occurrence of gender stereotypes in English language coursebooks for grammar and secondary schools. Its theoretical part offers the reader an insight into the issues of gender by defining its basic terms and by describing the individual areas of gender stereotyping. In the practical part the author analyses three different English language textbooks in terms of the occurrence of the aforementioned stereotypes. A survey conducted among three groups of students working with the textbooks investigates their views of gender stereotyping and supports the author's analyses. Both the author and the students try to suggest improvements of the individual textbook contents in order to avoid any gender stereotypes. In the conclusion, all three textbooks are compared and evaluated with special focus on whether they teach the students gender tolerant attitudes and are therefore appropriate or inappropriate for the purpose of education.
Marriage of farce and the play of ideas in Tom Stoppard 's Jumpers and Travesties
Navarová, Markéta ; Higgins, Bernadette (advisor) ; Chalupský, Petr (referee)
The diploma thesis focuses on Stoppard's combination of high and low genres, which Stoppard describes as the perfect marriage of the play of ideas and farce. On the grounds of several of Stoppard's plays, a general consideration of his dramatic work and definitions of the genres farce and the play of ideas, this detailed analysis of two of Stoppard's major plays Jumpers and Travesties shows a combination of the characteristic elements of these genres. The aim is to identify elements of farce and the play of ideas separately, evaluate their balance individually in Jumpers and Travesties and at the same time find similarities and differences between the original genres and Stoppard's interpretation, thus the combination of them. In the conclusion the author discusses the pros and cons of such a combination of genres and the possible motivation that led Stoppard to put together seriousness and frivolity.

The image of the city in contemporary British literature. The city in the works of Martin Amis and Ian McEwan
Chalupský, Petr ; Hilský, Martin (advisor) ; Nováková, Soňa (referee) ; Grmela, Josef (referee)
The city and its milieu have always been a source of inspiration and motifs for artists and writers are no exception. The process of urbanization brought along rapid social, political, cultural and economic changes which evoked immediate responses of various kinds, from welcoming and celebrating ones to those of rejection and condemnation, from those who were traditionally the most sensitive about such phenomena ~ men of letters. As a result of this fact, the image of the city has been present in literature since the first urban societies appeared and to trace it back in detail would mean a different aim from that which this work is going to follow. The main concern of my thesis is contemporary British literature and therefore I would like to focus on how the city is reflected in the works of British writers in the last two decades of the twentieth century. To provide certain general coherence, continuity and context of the theme, I will also put down a brief outline of how the image of the city has been developing and changing in English literature since the late Victorian period trying to show that the phenomenon is very deep-rooted in the tradition of the English imagination. If we should mention the most notable contemporary British writers whose works are set in cities or in some other way depict the...
Garden in Children's Literature - its presentation, role and symbolism in The Secret Garden and Tom's Midnight Garden
Jílková, Klára ; Chalupský, Petr (advisor) ; Farrell, Mark Robert (referee)
In my diploma thesis, I deal with the topic of the garden as it is presented in Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden and Ann Philippa Pearce's Tom's Midnight Garden. In the beginning, I discuss the reasons for the attractivity of this topic among children's authors in general, and introduce Burnett and Pearce. In the following chapters I focus mainly on the role of the gardens in the characters' lives, showing the positive effect they have on the characters, helping them to gradually change for the better. I concern myself with several themes, including the way and the circumstances in which the two gardens are discovered, the setting of the stories, and the magical aspects of both gardens. I also deal with the differences in the perception of time and with the interconnectivity of time levels in the stories. At the end of this thesis there is a chapter devoted to the way both authors present their gardens and on the means they use for their descriptions.
