This teaching has its roots in the theory of ransom to the Devil. It is assumed that Adam was created as the ruler of this world. But Adam's fall gave his property to Satan and Satan became the ordinary god of this world. But now Christ's sacrifice to Satan redeemed the world from Satan's hands and gave it back to believers.
