Jan Hus at Constance after 6 July 1415
Soukup, Pavel
This paper follows the sources and contexts in which John Hus appeared in the debates at the Council of Constance after his execution on 6 July 1415. In sermons and tracts, the figure of John Hus mainly served as a symbol of heresy. His teaching about the Church and the denial of papal supremacy were most often recalled from among his condemned theses. The Constance discourse about Hus after his burning at the stake laid the foundations to his negative reputation, which was to survive during the following phases of anti-Hussite polemics.
Habitat complexity and predation risk effects on community assembly in small standing waters
SOUKUP, Pavel
The effects of habitat complexity and predation risk on community assembly in small standing waters are reviewed. Both lethal and nonlethal predator effects are discussed. Emphasis is put on the role of omnivorous predators which do not fit into the standard food chain model. The review is complemented by a manuscript intended for publication in Freshwater Biology. It reports the results of a mesocosm experiment focusing on the effects of both lethal and nonlethal predation risk, induced by the invasive crayfish species Orconectes limosus, and habitat complexity on the abundance and biomass of macroinvertebrates in a naturally assembled community.
Role of species interactions in colonization of small standing water bodies.
SOUKUP, Pavel
Factors influencing colonization of small standing water bodies by freshwater macronvertebrates are reviewed. Those factors include biotic and abiotic factors, density dependent effects and history effects. The most important biotic factors are predation and competition. Role of the presence of top invertebrate predator and macrovegetation on colonization is discussed. The review is complemented by a controlled field experiment, which demonstrates that the role of vegetation is likely stronger than the role of sublethal predation risk.
Fiscal Discretion in the Czech Republic in 2001–2011: Has It Been Stabilizing?
Ambriško, Róbert ; Augusta, Vítězslav ; Hájková, Dana ; Král, Petr ; Netušilová, Pavla ; Říkovský, Milan ; Soukup, Pavel
We survey discretionary measures of Czech fiscal policy in the period 2001–2011 and analyze their episodes and macroeconomic impacts. We use bottom-up and top-down methods to identify fiscal discretion and we compare the results with Kalman filtering. Fiscal discretion is found to be used frequently and to be large in several years. At the same time, the results signal that macroeconomic stabilisation has not been major aim of fiscal discretion measures. For example, in the years of economic recession 2010–2011, the government put emphasis on pro-cyclical consolidation.
