Abstract: Factors influencing colonization of small standing water bodies by freshwater macronvertebrates are reviewed. Those factors include biotic and abiotic factors, density dependent effects and history effects. The most important biotic factors are predation and competition. Role of the presence of top invertebrate predator and macrovegetation on colonization is discussed. The review is complemented by a controlled field experiment, which demonstrates that the role of vegetation is likely stronger than the role of sublethal predation risk.
