Temperature Inversion and Heat Transport Against the Temperature Drop in Two-Phase Convection of Cryogenic Helium
Urban, Pavel ; Schmoranzer, D. ; Hanzelka, Pavel ; Skrbek, L.
In the system of two bodies A and B connected by a two-phase vapour-liquid system consisting only of cryogenic helium, we observed anomalous heat transport from the colder but heated body B to the warmer but cooled body A. We noticed this effect during the process of liquid evaporation inside a cylindrical pressure convection cell used for study of Rayleigh-Bénard convection. This anomalous heat transfer occurs under non-equilibrium conditions, owing to the phase transitions that take place inside the cell while temperature inversion develops between the heated but cooler bottom plate and the cooled but warmer top plate. This process is, by virtue of the system being open with respect to heat transport, in no contradiction to the second law of thermodynamics, and a numerical model was formulated that describes the observations with good agreement.
Experimental setup for probing a von-Karman type flow of normal and superfluid helium
Schmoranzer, D. ; Rotter, M. ; Šebek, Josef ; Skrbek, L.
We describe the setup, present and discuss the available preliminary data and outline planned experiments that thanks to a possibility of simultaneous detection by three independent complementary techniques ought to bring new results in studies of quantum turbulence and its classical counterpart.

Experimentální výzkum laminární a turbulentní odporové síly v klasickém a quantovém proudění mezní vrstvy
Blažková, Michaela ; Schmoranzer, D. ; Skrbek, Ladislav
Various types of oscillating structures have been important for probing the hydrodynamic properties of quantum fluids since the discovery of superfluidity. Both the classical viscous boundary layer flows and the quantum flows due to oscillating objects display transitions from laminar to turbulent drag regime. It is interesting to compare classical and quantum cases.
Kavitace v kapalném heliu vyvolaná vibrujícím křemenným krystalem
Blažková, Michaela ; Chagovets, Tymofiy ; Rotter, M. ; Schmoranzer, D. ; Skrbek, Ladislav
An experimental setup containing a quartz tuning fork inside a pressure cell in a glass helium cryostat enables us to experimentally observe effects in liquid He, which we ascribe to cavitation (as these are absent in gaseous He), taking place in the vicinity of the fork. Liquid helium can be prepared extremely clean and wets almost ideally any solid surface – it provides an ideal model system to study cavitation.
Přechod z laminární do turbulentní odporové síly v proudění vyvolaném vibrujícím křemenným krystalem v normálním a supratekutém heliu
Blažková, Michaela ; Schmoranzer, D. ; Šindler, M. ; Skrbek, Ladislav
The transition from laminar to turbulent drag regime was observed in normal and superfluid helium. This transition is characterized by critical velocity and we showed, that critical velocity scales as ν.sup.1/2./sup., where ν stands for kinematic viscosity.
PIV technique for investigations of cryogenic helium flow
Blažková, Michaela ; Chagovets, Tymofiy ; Rotter, M. ; Schmoranzer, D. ; Skrbek, L.
We describe various aspects of cryogenic PIV technique and give examples of its successful application of various flows of cryogenic helium, with appropriately chosen of tracking particles such as hollow glass spheres, polymer microspheres or solid hydrogen-deuterium flakes.
