Optical coatings for absorption cells

One of the key optical components used in laser stabilisation is an absorption cell filled with a gas medium. The optical windows of these cells are antireflection coated to minimise optical losses. During the production process, these coatings are subject to high temperatures and are in direct contact with the gas medium. In some special applications, there might be other factors, such as cosmic radiation, to consider. This contribution deals with the coatings’ resistance to these effects.

Several prototypes have been tested on e-beam writers and will enter production.

The aim of the contract research project was to design an optical system that generates a laser beam of a specific shape. The optical system was based on a specially designed aspheric lens. The lens parameters were calculated using an optimization algorithm. The properties of the generated beam were verified in specialized software for the design of optical systems.

The contractual research was oriented towards development of the optical frequency references intended for frequency stabilization of compact laser sources. These optical references were based on absorption cells filled with ultra-pure absorption gases and they allow precise locking of the lasers with the methods of laser spectroscopy. The cells will serve as the references of optical frequencies in systems of primary length standards (633 nm wavelength).

We stude the influence of thermal annealing on the optical performance of thin film coatings used in laser spectroscopy with iodine-filled absorption cells. We are particulary interested in the temperature influence on the position of the residual reflection minimum in the spectrum and on the permeation of the working gas into the coating structure depending on the coating technology used.\n

This optical reference was based on absorption cell filled with ultra-pure absorption gases and it allows precise locking of the lasers with the methods of laser spectroscopy. The cell uses special multi-pass arrangement of measuring laser beams and it is equipped with combined antireflective and highly-reflective dielectric coatings on its optical windows.

The cells use special opto-mechanical arrangement ensuring their ability to withstand in-satellite operation.
