Lucie Cupalová - Master's Thesis The Slash Factor: Characteristics and Varieties of Slash Fan Fiction Abstract The aim of the thesis is to discuss specific characteristics of slash fan fiction, both as a subgenre of fan fiction and as a literary and social phenomenon. These characteristics are summarised as the "slash factor" of "slash texts". The beginning of the theoretical part focuses on the history and development of (slash) fan fiction, its various definitions and its role as a specific genre in literature. It summarises the basic premises and principles of fan fiction and explains them on slash fan fiction in particular. Sedgwick's homosocial - homosexual continuum in society is discussed, as well as its understanding and application on same-sex interactions, and several reasons for the reading and writing of slash fan fiction and its appeal are suggested. The main part of the thesis analyses actual slash fan fiction in three different fandoms: Harry Potter, Sherlock (Holmes), and Nightrunners. Each of them offers a different set of characters and slash tropes. Similarities and differences are sought in the stories written in different fandoms. Americanization: American Television Culture and Its Impact on the Czech broadcast

This thesis deals with a phenomenon of 'Americanization', which can be explained as a process when the culture and lifestyle of the United States of America penetrate the culture of other countries. Specifically, the thesis focuses on one of the most influential and the most influenced kind of culture - the television broadcast, which has been enriched by the United States with several new types of programs and innovations. The first part puts Americanization into historical context of the Czech Republic and also describes two of the most influential elements of American TV: Nielsen ratings and reality show. Further, the second part includes several analytical contemplations on Americanization and examines how and to which extent the American broadcast has affected the Czech one.

Influence of Phonetic Literacy on the Perception Ability of Czech Learners of English

The thesis covers the main points of L2 acquisition with the main focus on L2 perception and production. The relevant theories concerning acquisition of L2 phonology were outlined and some important points stressed, namely, the role of L1 phonology on L2 perception and subsequently production. The subjects of final stop devoicing and pre-fortis shortening were mentioned with relation to Czech speakers of English. In the practical part, the thesis provides an account of a perceptual experiment that focused on the perception of word-final /t/ and /d/ phonemes of English by Czech students of English phonetics. It was found that Czech students are susceptible to their L1 phonology in distinguishing the voicing contrast word-finally. No significant overall correlation was found between the knowledge of pre-fortis shortening and the performance in a subsequent perceptual test. The aim of this thesis is to compare Nick Cave's lyrics with his prosaic work, especially the novel And the Ass Saw the Angel. It focuses on the main topics covered in his work, such as love, sadness, suffering, death, murder, violence, music, drugs, sex and religion. The topic are observed in relation to the lyrical or epic elements of the text. There are many parallels in his novels that relate to his lifestyle as a musician and a performer.

This bachelor's thesis, titled Stereotypical portrayals of Native Americans in Lynne Reid Banks's The Indian in the Cupboard, focuses on the phenomenon of stereotypical portrayals of Native Americans in Lynne Reid Banks's book The Indian in the Cupboard. The theoretical part of the thesis is devoted to the topics of stereotype and ethnocentrism with a focus on Native Americans. It also includes a brief outline of the historical development of literary works concerning Native Americans and discusses the importance of accuracy in children's literature. The practical part focuses on an analysis of particular stereotypes present in the book and criticism concerning the book. English Orthography in Relation to Common Misspelling Tendecies

The main aim of this thesis is to outline three major fields that are closely connected to language, writing and speech: 'writing systems', 'English orthography' and 'English spelling'. These parts are fully theoretical and serve as an introduction and source of basic information for the supplementary research on 'common misspelling tendencies' in the English language. The primary part of this research is composed of a comparison of individual commonly misspelled words and their further analysis in relation to the English orthography. Each major part uses linguistic terms and phrases which are briefly explained in the 'keywords' section at the end of the thesis.
