The concept of man in Baltasar Gracián's "El Criticón"
Matlová, Anna ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (advisor) ; Fousek, Michal (referee)
This study deals with the concept of man in the allegorical novel of Baltasar Gracián's El Criticón. It is divided into three parts. The first part tries to describe shortly the events in Europe in the 16. and 17. century and show how they could possibly affect Gracián's life (the spanish crisis after the Thirty Years' War, the rebellion in Catalonia and Portugal). It also mentions some ideas that had an impact on his work, such as the idea of the heliocentric system, etc. The main importance is given to the foundation of the Jesuit Order, whose member Gracián was. In accordance with the moralistic character of Gracián's work I tried to sketch the outlines of the Jesuit morality, such as the free choice of every human and God's Grace; also I pointed out some ideas of Erasmus surviving in that period. Then I focused shortly on some of the baroque topoi, like the insanity of the world, life like a pilgrimage or the world upside down.
Magic realism and baroque literature
Urfus, Ondřej ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (referee) ; Housková, Anna (advisor)
The thesis is focused on comparison of the Magic realism with the Baroque. Common characteristics were analyzed in following literary works: the baroque play by Pedro Calderón de la Barca (1600-1681) Life is a dream (La vida es sueo) and the novel The President (El Segor Presidente) by a Nobel Price-winning Guatemalan writer, representative of Magic realism, Miguel Ángel Asturias (1899-1974). The analysis was accomplished by using the transhistorical method which allows to interconnect two trends from different time periods and sociological aspects. Suffering, distress, insecurity and neverending armed conflicts characterise the Baroque period. Beginning of dictatorship, insecurity and persecution of indigenous population create a background of the magic realism in Latin America. In the formal expressions and content we can find following Baroque features in the Magic Realism: important contrasts (opposition of darkness and light, space and exuberance, barbarian manner and mercy), animalization of characters, theatralisation of Calderon`s theatre (théâtre dans le théâtre); syncretism, lots of metamorphs and allegory, oxymorons and important textual sonority. Asturias`s novel sometimes changes into a poetic prose and therefore it is approaching Calderon's literary expression. Additional irony in Asturias`s...
The concept of space in the literary work of Jorge Luis Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares
Tobiašová, Veronika ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (referee) ; Housková, Anna (advisor)
This thesis, entitled "The Concept of Space in the Literary Work of Jorge Luis Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares", presents the concept of space in the literary work of Borges and Bioy Casares, in particular in the short stories "The House of Asterion" and "The 69 Circular Ruins", and the novel The Invention of Morel. The study is based on theoretical works on the concept of space. Its main focus are the literary archetypes that appear in the works in question, and the ways in which the lines between the real and the fictitious fade away. It presents the vision of the world of both writers. The first part of this work is based on Daniela Hodrová's theory of secular and sacred places and it analyzes the process of the "profanization of the sacred" in the works in question. The places originally dedicated to God lack in both authors a sacred character. Both writers convert literary space of their works into a place of artistic creation. Both the magician of "The Circular Ruins" and Morel of Bioy's novel make an attemp to imitate the demiurgic act. As far as Hodrová's analysis of house and prison is concerned, both writers create a house-prison hybrid; the places which are closed in a way (the museum, the maze), become the representation of the world where the character (Asterion, the narrator of The Invention of...

TWO ENCOUNTERS OF THE NEW WORLD: CHRISTOBAL COLUMBUS AND BARTOLOMÉ DE LAS CASAS At first, this work introduces us to the history of Europe in the 15th century. The most important part of this work is anal ysing the Diary of first journey when we meet the way of writing and his st yle of expression. We can observe now Christobal Columbus as an autor writing in spanish, his first testimony about the New World. In the following century, 16th, we learn more of the situation in the New World thanks to the spanish Catholic priest Bartolomé de Las Casas. We look at this man throught the eyes of his faith, convictions and from his writing. We confront Columbus's mere vision with Las Casas's hard realit y caused b y explotation of the New World. One of the main subjects of Las Casas's literature is the defence of the rights of Indians. This new theme is anal yzed philosophicall y, morall y and theologicall y. Facts are based on primary literature and testimonies. Of course, we work with the knowledge of so- called Black legend and accompanying New laws. The conclusion of this work...

The motif of solitude in the works of Octavio Paz and Ernesto Sabato
Rusnoková, Kamila ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (referee) ; Housková, Anna (advisor)
This study deals with the theme of solitude in the collection of essays entitled 'The Labyrinth of Solitude' by Octavio Paz and in the novel 'The Tunnel' by Ernesto Sabato. After an introductory chapter, which introduces the word 'solitude' from an etymological and semantic point of view, this thesis addresses the concept of solitude in general i.e. how this concept is understood in psychology and, last but not least, in philosophy. As the topic of this thesis is the motif of solitude in literary works the occurence of this theme throughout the history of literature will also be mentioned. The next crucial part of the thesis focuses on the analysis of the two selected works. The first one is the previously mentioned collection of essays 'The Labyrinth of Solitude'. The analysis of the individual essays, in the order in which they occur in the second edition published in 1959, represents the most extensive part of the present thesis. With the topic of the thesis in mind, the theme of solitude is emphasized, as it appears in all of the essays, although it is expressed on various semantic levels. The conclusion of this part is a summary, which aims to elucidate the starting points of Octavio Paz and facilitates the overall understanding of his work. In the following part of the thesis, the second selected work...
Reply to sister Filotea of the Cross: conflict of the reason and the faith
Marková, Eliška ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (referee) ; Vydrová, Hedvika (advisor)
There are many mysterious facts and circumstances surrounding the life and work of the nun Juana Inés de la Cruz. This thesis tries to provide answers for many of these particulars. Specifically those facts associated with the emergence of Replay to Sister Filotea of the Cross. It is, however, not possible to find a definite answer or interpretation. Juana lived in difficult times for a woman with high skills. She was not allowed to decide freely in many situations due to her being female. Her life and her creations were much closer to real social life than to closed religious inner life. Nevertheless, Juana was inspired by religious themes and was influenced by medieval mysticism. This is reflected mainly in the artistic side of her artwork. Although at the end of her life she had what might be called a spiritual conversion, it had no any effect on her literary work. Even though it had not been her primary interest, Juana became active in theological disputation. Upon request of another person she submitted Vieyra's sermon to her criticism. The letter Carta athenagorica was a crucial milestone in Juana's life, just like her decision to become a nun. Due to the letters' publication, we can now read what this writer felt, who is nowadays considered as such an important part of the nascent Latin American...
Transformations of the novel heroine from Romanticism by Modernism: María, Lucía Jerez, Ídolos rotos
Lněničková, Jana ; Sánchez Fernández, Juan Antonio (referee) ; Vydrová, Hedvika (advisor)
The objective of this thesis is to show how female's protagonists had changed from Romanticism by Modernism. On that purpose we decided to choose and compare three different novels: María (by Jorge Isaacs), Lucía Jerez (by José Martí) and Broken Idols (Ídolos rotos by Manuel Díaz Rodríguez). The thesis begins with an introduction to Romanticism and Modernism and then it is divided into three main parts; each of them is focused on one of the novels. As for three parts, first, we mention a story line of each novel and then we focus on three main female heroines: María, Lucía and Teresa. We start with María. María is considered to be a romantic novel. It is a story about unfortunate love between Efraín and María. María is young, beautiful, innocent and pure. We do not know much about her feelings or thoughts because it is Efraín (her love and narrator of the story), who describes everything. It seems like María has no will, she let other people to decide for her. At the end of the story María dies, but she will always be in Efraín's heart; pure and beautiful as she was during her short life. The novel Lucía Jerez stays between Romanticism and Modernism. It is also a love story, but this kind of love is different from the idyllic one we have seen in María. Lucía is engaged to her cousin, Juan. Another young...
