The End of the CSFR and the role of political elits in this process
Vimmr, Martin Kryšpín ; Říchová, Blanka (advisor) ; Švec, Kamil (referee)
This paper focuses on the dissolution of Czech and Slovak Federal Republic in the context of Arend Lijphart's theory of consociational democracy. It is a comparative case study in which is compared the case of Czechoslovak federation with consociational democracy as a normative type. The paper consists of theoretical and empirical part. The consociational theory itself and its relation to the federalism are described in the first one. In the empirical part are sought all major consociational principles (grand coalition, mutual veto, proportionality, segmental autonomy and political discretion) in the Czechoslovak political system in the time around elections in 1992. The main reason why should be Czechoslovakia placed in the context of consociationalism is fact that the Arend Lijphart (author of the theory) himself identifies Czechoslovakia as a book example of consociational democracy. The existence of strongly divided segments in Czechoslovakia is proven in this paper by the same method as Lijphart uses in Netherlands. The election results of both ethnics - Czechs and Slovaks - were strictly divided in the years 1990 and 1992. This means that there were no political parties that were successful in both republics at the same time. Most of the consociational principles were found in the Czechoslovak...
Multiculturalism in Netherlands and Canada
Červeňová, Barbora ; Šánová, Lucie (advisor) ; Říchová, Blanka (referee)
Diploma thesis focuses on integration policies in the Netherlands and Canada since 1970' s till nowadays. Both countries are well known for implementing multiculturalism. Canada has become the only country that through Multiculturalism Act claimed official support for multiculturalism policy and is still doing so even recently when this model is being refused by most of the other countries. Such a situation developed in the Netherlands which became an example of a failure of multiculturalism. However multiculturalism was of a different kind in each of those countries and so was the final form of integration policies. The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse similarities and differences in both integration policies and to find relevant factors that impacted their failure in the Netherlands and their success in Canada. Diploma thesis describes the basic milestones in the development of integration policies and changes in the respective time period. It also points out the main differences in the concept of multiculturalism in the Netherlands and Canada and tries to explain it on the historical, state building, national identity and multiculture background.

Hynková, Zuzana ; Říchová, Blanka (advisor) ; Kotábová, Věra (referee)
American presidential elections have always attracted the interest of the whole world. It is not only because their results influence the policies of the greatest world power, but also thanks to the specific features, events and activities connected with them. The electoral process is unique as far as selection of candidates by political parties is concerned, and also due to the specific electing the president by Electoral College. It has been very often observed that the decisive factor of the American presidential election is a well-set "geography strategy", i.e. focusing on specific states and regions of the USA. The main reason of this phenomenon is the unique electoral system, in which due to the system of Electoral College a necessity emerges - coming with the correct strategic decision on the victorious "geographical coalition", which is to secure the winning the election by the presidential candidate. The aim of my work is an analysis of American presidential elections held from 1980 - 2004 focused on geographical distribution of electoral preference. Which regions and which states were the source of support for the Republican Party candidates and their Democratic competitors in individual presidential elections in the years 1980 - 2004 and in which states shifts in the electoral preference...

The Bachelor's thesis "Democrats 66 at the Dutch Political Scene" considers the political life in the Netherlands during the second half of the 20th century. The political party Democrats '66 was established in October 1966 with the view of reform the Dutch political system and democratize the Dutch society. It experienced several intraparty crises, after one of which (in 1985) the party renamed Democrats 66. It designates itself as the left-of-centre, progressive liberal party. The Bachelor's thesis is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the party establishment and its internal development up to the present day. It examines in detail two main party requirements - a direct election of the Prime Minister and a change of the Second Chamber electoral system. Further, it contains an analysis of party election programs, its election results to the Second Chamber and a development of the party membership. The point is to ascertain a reason for the party establishment and partly its maintenance at the Dutch political scene. The second part deals with the party participation on government coalitions and especially with its formation and functioning of those governments. The particular attention is given to the representation of Democrats '66 (Democrats 66, respectively) and its policy in those...
Political representation of immigrational minorities in the Netherlands
Burjanová, Martina ; Knotková - Čapková, Blanka (advisor) ; Říchová, Blanka (referee)
My master thesis study political representation of immigratory minorities in the Netherlands. I analyzed the political aspects of peaceful co-existence of majority and minorities that speak different language, profess different religion or have different color of skin. I presented concept of political integration that stands for agreement on rules under which the political decisions are passed. This concept is based on codified norms of the society and their consistent enforcement regardless ethnicity of people who break them. The second part of political integration is authentic representation of minorities which is the state that secures that representatives of minorities may effectively participate in policy making and removing of discrimination. Authentic representation supposes that there are political representatives with minority origin minorities in the legislative bodies. The second condition is that they are able to communicate and to understand to participate in the political discussions. The third assumption is political recognition assuming that the representatives from majority do not have any prejudice against minorities and take as equal partners in the political discussion. I analyzed the theoretical conclusions on the case of the Netherlands and its policy towards immigration. Powered by...
