Milena Jesenská and her work for Lidové noviny and Přítomnost
Němečková, Sára ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Knapík, Jiří (referee)
The thesis deals with the journalistic works of Milena Jesenská not only in Lidové noviny but also in the magazine Přítomnost in 1929 - 1930, resp. in 1937 - 1939. In her works we can find a number of repetitive topics. Most of them have in large part roots in her life. Her literaty output is permanently penetrated by her permanent need to help her surroundings and to protect her weaker residents, which is according to author's biographers for Milena Jesenská sheer crucial. The author stood in the years 1929 - 1930 as the head of women's section of Lidové noviny and was trying very hardly to fight for the change of the form of this section in the print at that time. Another significant topic was the issue of a modern woman and her role in the society at that time. The thesis deals also with the resonance of social relations and historic events in the examined texts. Politically tuned reflections or reports and reportage by Milena Jesenská in the magazine Přítomnost bring an authentic perspective to the atmosphere in the Czechoslovak society at that time.
Author's book in the works of Petr Nikl and Petr Sís and its media response
Němečková, Sára ; Čeňková, Jana (advisor) ; Batistová, Anna (referee)
The thesis deals with the media reception of selected works by Peter Sis and Petr Nikl within the Czech and the American media. It is the books The Three Golden Keys and The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain by Peter Sis and the books Záhádky and Linguistic Fairy Stories by Petr Nikl. A secondary concern was given on the media image of the Czech authors' books and the literary awards that are awarded in the Czech republic, such as Magnesia Litera or the Golden Ribbon. A qualitative analysis was used on the articles which were obtained through the Newton databases in the case of the Czech media. In case of the American media the articles were obtained through Google and the EBSCO and JSTOR databases. One of the surprising findings was that there was more focus put on the selected topic within the regular daily newspapers and the mainstream media, rather than within serials that are mainly focused on literature and culture. Also the hypothesis was confirmed that an author's success in the area of literary awards leads to an increase in the intensity of media reception.
